Items on Chronicle Sheets

Unless I'm missing something, many of the items on chronicle sheets seem to be there for absolutely no reason that I can see (its even worse than early seasons in PFS).

The Always Available list includes all items from the Core book with an item level of Character level +1. So, all items from the Core book at level 2 and lower are always available.

For higher levels, there is the edge case where somebody plays a pregen so there is some tiny value in listing items of (for example) tier 4+ in a 3-6.

The Commencement has 9 items, 7 of which are ALWAYS available.
Into the Unknown has 6 items, 5 of which are ALWAYS available
Fugitive On the Red Planet (low tier) has 16 items, 15 of which are ALWAYS available. Even worse, 2 of the Always available items have a limit on how many you can buy!

Perhaps Paizo is anticipating more rule books and a subsequent CORE SFS campaign in the future.

Keep in mind that Starfinder has only two products with item content at launch (Core Rulebook and Dead Suns #1). Also note that these items are spread across 20 levels worth of content. So comparing us to early seasons of Pathfinder Society is certainly valid, because the amount of available content is certainly different to the smorgasbord of what's available in modern Pathfinder.

This is intentional; the only exception being on the Dead Suns #1 Chronicle sheet. Due to the presence of Infamy, a PC who takes repeated Infamy-earning actions could conceivably lock themselves out of getting access to "always available" items prior to reaching 2nd level. It's certainly a corner case, and probably something we might look at adjusting on future Chronicle sheets, at least until we get a broader range of non-Core Rulebook low-level items. To start, it made sense for us to include these items.

Thats one HECK of an edge case.

In PFS I've experienced difficulty explaining early chronicle sheets where nearly meaningless items are included. Not listing essentially always available items seems much simpler to me. Lets one find the actually useful stuff much quicker.

The items in question are all from the Core book. And the guide already differentiates between Core and other items in terms of when they can be bought.

It's a current solution. It, like any other process with Starfinder Society, is something Organized Play will keep an eye on and change if necessary. Removing these items from the Chronicle sheet, in the current product environment, creates the situation of only having 1-2 items on a Chronicle sheet, which is something you indicated would be undesirable with the "its even worse than early seasons in PFS" statement.

We'll keep our eyes on this and course correct as necessary. For what it's worth, the Dead Suns #1 boon does not include lower level items as a result of Chronicle sheet space.

There is also the possibility of a future boon which gives you a discount on items purchased from chronicle sheet access (similar to the Exchange faction journal card in PFS).

And besides, it feel cool to have something on the chronicle sheet to get if you wanted. In PFS, at higher levels it really does not matter to put times on the sheets because you already have the fame to get them normally.

But it is still cool to see it.

Plus, there may be boons that allow you buy items from chronicle at a discount. Exchange faction cards allow that!

You can only buy items one greater than the the character's level from the core book. If it's on a chronicle you can buy it when it's 2 levels above your character level. That's the benefit for society.

Are you level 3 and really want some level 5 armor? Hey you found some on that last chronicle and can get it a level early.

And if you somehow got infamy, as Thurston mentioned earlier, the chronicle sheets could save your bacon.

I mean, if they really wanted, they could include some Pathfinder items as part of the chronicle sheet access. Give them item levels. Potions would be easy... "Caster level of the potion is the item level"

Such a boon already seems to exist, at least if I'm reading it correctly.

Based on my reading of this, this 10% discount only applies to equipment listed on the chronicle sheet and if so is a great reason for TPTB to list every item you find on the sheet.
