Monster HP

Rules Questions

Sorry if this is a real basic question. I just recently started playing Pathfinder about a week ago and I'm still learning the ropes. So you may see me post other simple questions in the coming days, but anywho.

When I'm looking at any NPC or monster and their hp shows as, 15 (2d8+6).
Does that mean its base hp is 15 and every level after that I would roll 2d8+6 to determine what it would be the following level?

No, that's just two different methods of expressing its current hit points. The actual hit points are 2d8+6, which is relevant in case you alter the creature or don't use average hit points. The '15' is the average result of 2d8+6, which is listed because the base assumption is to use average hit points for monsters.

Alright thank you! :)

It's also a handy way for you to know how many hit dice a monster is for spells that dependent upon the monster's hit die, like Sleep.

To further clarify, all creatures gain hit dice. For players and most NPCs, this is the die you roll when you gain a class level (wizards get a d6, barbarians a d12, etc...). All monsters get the same thing, depending on the TYPE of creature they are (animals get a d8, dragons gain a d12, etc...), and they may have more than 1 depending on how old/big/tough the creature is.

The number after the dice is their additional HP from their Con bonus (if any), and any feats or abilities that may be adding HP as well (such as the Toughness feat or the additional hit point per level you may take for your favored class).

Liberty's Edge

Not many people actually roll monster hp any more...just assuming the average. Whether that's good or bad...well, during gameplay, you can't often tell, so I don't suppose it matters much.
