Agreed. Unless the AC had a particularly high int, then they should be triggering it. For example, one of the Oracle revelations grants an AC with a minimum 6 int, so that one should be able to avert its gaze, but most animals companions with an int of 3 or less shouldn't.

Preventively I wouldn't allow anyone not making an appropriate Knowledge check or with experience with a bodak to avert his eyes. As unintelligent animal companions don't have knowledge skill they will not avert their eyes unless ordered in some way by the master.
After they have been hit by the gaze, even if they have made the sawing throw, they would know that the eyes of the monster do something bad and try to avoid looking them. I would have them averting their eyes but not fight with closed eyes as that would be completely against their nature.
Several animals don't like staring contest, so it relatively normal for them to avoid looking someone in the eyes.

I agree with you. I didn't state it, but I was thinking of a scenario where the character would know about it and tell the AC to avert its eyes.
