Preferred Spell to Qualify for Dragon Disciple

Rules Questions

Scarab Sages

I know that it is not the norm, but is it possible to do it? Is it PFS legal to qualify for Dragon Disciple with the Preferred Spell feat?

You have to be able to cast 1st level spells spontaneously--1st level spells in general not just a specific number of them. Otherwise, a Hedge Witch would qualify without any feats since they can spontaneously cast Cure spells.

Can I ask, though, why are so many people enamored with Dragon Disciple? It seems pretty lousy to me.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Because DRAGONS!!!!

Scarab Sages

Str! Natural Armor. Caster Levels. Bonus feat. Claws and a bite. Dragon breath. That's about it. All good by the way.

Still, a sorcerer can cast only 2 spells, so just one more than 1, yet it is what qualifies. In fact all classes that qualify can cast only 2 spells at first level.

Why shouldn't the witch qualify? Plus, spontaneous is something else.

Welp, if I was going to go Dragon Disciple I would probably be doing it for the sweet sweet natural attacks so I would choose True Strike and Shield as my two spells.

It's a pretty lousy class for a spellcaster, but a pretty decent class for a melee fighter (for the first 4-7 levels, anyway).

In my mind it's fairly similiar to the Eldritch Knight class. It's a switch hitter caster/meleer but full of flavor and not boring like the EK is :)

Also DRAGONS!

It's a fairly solid class though.

The prereq for Dragon Disciple doesn't say you have to be able to cast spells spontaneously, it says you have to be able to cast without preparation. That, combined with Preferred Spell's cost of sacrificing prepared spells, makes the idea shaky at best.

Preferred Spell you can cast your one spell spontaneously by sacrificing either a prepared spell or a spell slot of equal or higher level. Sorcerers don't prepare spells, they use up spell slots. In my mind, burning two of your feat slots to qualify for the PrC would be okay. I say twofeats because you're required to be able to cast "spells", multiple, without preparation.

So, a crossblooded sorc 1 / Barb 4 would NOT be able to qualify for DD, as they only know 1 first level spell?

The idea(RAI) is that you have to be a spontaneous caster such as a bard or sorcerer.
