Long story short I think James Earl Jones is the last one standing.
You can go with my answer, since he's too lazy to cut n paste no reason you can't cheat yourself.

Lazy is a good thing...Lazy is the mother of invention after all.

Fitting, since PETA is a PitA.
And this is coming from a vegetarian. Those people are to animal lovers what Jerry Falwell was to Christianity. Making the rest of us look loopy by association.
Yeah PETA is a lot crazier than most people know. Especially when it comes to pet ownership and medical testing.
They feed on people wanting to do good....much like a lot of the environmental movements.

What's your favorite type of cheese, John?
How do you like your coffee? Roast, condiments, brand, country of origin, flavors, etc?
Who is your favorite author?
Cheddar I would say....but I in general like all cheeses.
I don't like coffee....actually I loath coffee. I used to work at a gas station convenient store and had to handle the coffee rush in the morning for years...after that I could not look at coffee without thinking of the messes I had to clean up.
I like David Eddings, Robert Heinlien, Robert MacCammon, David Weber and just recently discovered I really like Chris A Jackson and Viola Carr.

John Kretzer |

That sucks. I can't handle heat the same as I could when I was younger, but I still like spice a lot.
I can eat a little hot foods as long as it is not too hot...even than I can only eat a little. It is annoying as no one seems to believe me when I say I can't eat spicey hot foods.

Speaking, of life. How's yours?
Good for you, man! I personally hate overtime (I don't even like working 40), but the pay is nice.

I love getting overtime for two reasons...
1) I have always worked crappy low paying jobs so when I get overtime it is a nice bonus. The largest check I ever made was just over a thousand dollars...I worked 85 hours to get it.
2) Currently I am at UPS which works overtime is determine for part timers how many hours you worked in a day not the week. So anything over 5 hours in that day is considered overtime no matter what you do for the rest of the week. So take last week in which I worked 37 hours. 25 hr is at straight time, 8 hours on Sunday which is all OT, and 4 of OT during the week. So it is possible at my current job to get some OT without working over 40hrs (or 25 hr for Part timers).

Owww, I got a good one for you John. Why do people take Christmas way to seriously?
For example, my mother (let us not forget I am 35) has been harassing me to convince my wife to change our Christmas plans to spend Xmas day with my family instead of my wife's family, and it will be my wife's Grandmothers last visit to Rochester (at 86 as it were). Now I am stuck between the two factions and of course it falls to me to decide what we do. Hey, now I know why I am depressed for Yule.
But what do you think, bonus points if you have advice for getting out of this holiday doom knot.

In all seriousness tho, I found being incredibly noncommittal cures so much of that. They're just grateful you're there at all! :-)
Warning: you will have to blow off a family gathering at least once to make it believable, I recommend 4th of July or Easter. This gives you enough time for people to get over your previous spurning.

John Kretzer |

Why are you depressed?
This time of year reminds that my life really sucks( in some ways....there are people that are a whole lot worse than mine) ...
My Brother and sisters have moved on and have careers and a family of their own and don't come around for the holidays anymore. So it is just me and my parents....and when they go it will just be me.
My friends also have their own things to do.
Also it is a time when you see friends of your patents and distant family...and when they ask me so how are you doing...I just feel pathetic at my life.

I don't know....but people in general tend to take anything to seriously. To quote Oscar Wilde, "Life is to important to be taken seriously".
My advice is to spend Christmas with your wife's family...you probably see your wife more than your mother. But do a cameo at your family's Christmas shindig.

If it helps, I'm not the rock star I assumed I'd be by now.
In fact, I might actually be a worse musician now, then I was then.
I wanted to be writer...but that never seems to happen...I get side tracked too much by RL. And well to be honest probably never that good.
Also it not so much what I wanted to do with my life...it is more by the standards of society I am a failure....you are expected to have a family...to have a job that supports you etc. Usually I just ignore society...but it is hard this time of year.

thegreenteagamer |

My life is pretty darn far from what I expected. I coasted through school without ever trying and expected life to be the same way. I can't pay attention or focus on a project, despite coming up with dozens of ideas, I always fall off after a few weeks...writing, podcasting, almost everything.
Yeah, like you said, there are people worse off than you, but I know when you're depressed it's hard to let that comfort you. It used to be, when I was really bad, if someone told me other people had it worse, I would say "Knowing someone else has a broken leg doesn't heal my fractured wrist!"
But the fact is, in a lot of ways, it can. Not directly, of course, but just helping to realize how much worse it can be.
Life is about perspective. What's that old saying? 90% of your experience is attitude, 10% is circumstances, I think it was.
You have a good job, earning pretty good money (last I checked UPS had great Bennies and above average pay), you still have your parents, which a lot of people can't say, I'm sure you have at least one good friend, right? It's not about quantity, it's quality.
If you want, you're in my prayers, John. I don't know you, but you seem like a real kind guy from what I've seen. I can't imagine you don't have friends.
So, yeah, that's my next question for your thread. What's your best friend like?

Thank you for putting me in your prayers I need all the help I can get.
Yeah pretty much I breezed though school...I got A on tests with little to no studying...I also felt since I was getting As on the test I did not get the need for home work...so my grades were not that good. And in College I learned you actually did have to study for stuff.
As to my Best Friend...he is nice guy who has been there for me in the past. The thing is he has moved about a hour away....and has hooked up with a girl I just don't like...and think is using him. I also get the feeling she is trying to drive a wedge between us...meh.
Most of my other friend are the 'x' friend kind...like work friends or gamer friends.

thegreenteagamer |

My pastor once said that a true friend...someone you really can trust, or depend on, who actually is a friend and not just an acquaintance...is a serious blessing, and if you have even one you can count, you have something to be thankful for. An hour away kind of sucks, but it's not so bad, you can visit without having to make major preparations.
The girlfriend thing, yeah, that happens. Just don't try to force the issue. Bros before hoes may be the phrase, but when your genitals are involved, it's hard to make a wise decision. I would buy her a random gift, say it's for making your friend so happy, and just try to be nice. Few people can stay mean to you when you're overtly friendly to them without trying to get something out of them - she may actually try to get you two to hang out more. If she really is awful, it won't weather the test of time, and you can tell him after the fact "I didn't want to say it while you were dating, buuuuut..." If it does last, well, you'll at least still have your buddy without someone trying to pull you apart.

Thanks John, same to you sir. Also, your not the only one having a crap holiday season, my gift this year was my 72 year old father falling in his driveway and ending up in intensive care, so spent Christmas eve in the hospital. Seeing him laid up and pretty much helpless did not sit well with me. Worse, there isn't squat I can do to help him.
Too bad you are bout half a continent away, else I would bring sorrow liqueur to share. I sure as hell need a drink right about now (despite it being 3pm, and I am at work, BAH!)

Yeah that is why I hate visiting people in the hospitable....just feel so helpless.
But I'll have a drink with you in spirit and may your father get better.
