Boggard Subtype

Rise of the Runelords

First, I love the boggards. Nice work, whoever wrote them. :)

Second, why do they have a unique subtype instead of being reptilian?

1) I agree. I'm already thinking up uses for them.

2) Frogs are amphibians not reptiles. Aquatic may therefore be more appropriate, but still not fully appropriate. Perhaps Paizo is planning further boggards? (Which would be awesome.)

The description given of them does indicate that there are boggards in other locations, with different appearances. It wouldn't be out of the question for them to have different enough stats and habits to justify separate listings. I hope so, I like them, too. I just like swamps, actually, and I'm rather excited by the implication that at least a part of PF2 will take place in or near a swamp.

I don't have anything useful to say but: I LOVE THESE BOGGARDS !!!

Scarab Sages

I like the Boggards also. I have always had a soft spot in my heart for Wastri, the Hopping Prophet in Greyhawk, and I think Gogunta is a nice replacement.

Where are the boggards? I was told (by Jimmy J) that they would more than fulfill my Bullywug Love quota. So where can I get a glimpse?

You can find the new Boggards in the Blog of Pathfinder. As well it is great way that Paizo has once again in a sense reinvisioned an old monster. Love them.

Here's a link: Paizo blog.

You'll want to download and check out the sneak peek PDF for slimy Boggard goodness!

Thanks,

I am so jazzed to see this! Frog people are noticeably (almost) missing from 3.5. The only source for Bullywugs, for example, (of which I am aware) is the book with Forgotten Realms monsters.

Frog people--a la Boggards--make for awesome opponents! I just got Burnt Offerings two days ago. Now I'm all excited about the *next* volume...

That explains that. I was actually kind of curious as to why they'd make a monster that really just looked like a bullywug with more attention spent on it. I guess the 'wugs aren't OGL, then, are they?

Nope.

I love the boggards. You guys have a real talent for making humanoid races really stick out from one another.

I just love it!

You'll note that gnolls have the gnoll subtype. Kenkus have the kenku subtype.

It's kind of unfortunate that there aren't wider ranges of types available for humanoids, really, but in the case of the boggard, neither aquatic (they live mostly above water, after all) nor reptilian (they're not reptiles) worked. SO we chose to go with the boggard subtype. They do, after all, have their own language. AND they're probably going to become a big part of our world, even if they don't ever have one actually showing up in Rise of the Runelords. There are certainly other types of boggards out there in other parts of the world too.

Thanks for the explanation. :) I understand now.

Yeah... not only are bullywugs not OGL... they're not really designed all that well at all. They have terrible stat mods, for example. Especially since their "BIG" benefit (the summon monster trick) depends on them being able to cast cleric spells, but their hefty Wisdom penalties more or less ensure that they'll suck as clerics and barely be able to cast any spells anyway. Lame.

Boggards are better. :)

Yeah. Actually, I'd say Boggards are much better. And I love that tongue attack! It's both cool and disgusting at the same time!

Sweet!

Thanks, Kevin. I didn't even see this when I looked at the Blog to check out the Jimmy J Sci-Fi Luv post only a half hour before posting.

Jimmy J, will we see the Racial Traits for playing a Boggard in RotRL #2? If not what are they? I'd figure it out myself, but I SUCK at figuring out Racial Traits.

If the sample character is flat average (all 10s and 11s), the ability modifiers for a standard boggard are:

Str +4, Dex -2, Con +4, Int -2

That being the case, the modifiers for a priest-king would be:

Str +8, Dex -2, Con +8, Int -2, Wis +6

Nope. What you see in that spread is pretty much all we have to say about Boggards in Pathfinder 2. ECL races make poor PCs anyway.
