Can you make a trip attemp as an AoO or as part of an iterative attack?

Yup. Combine with a reach weapon, and you can trip people going from 10 to 5 feet away from you before they can attack you. Then you can smack them when they stand up.
Just remember that the provoked AoO from standing takes place before they complete their action to stand up, so you can't trip them again at that time (since they're already prone), but they do still have the -4 AC penalty for being prone.
