This is a response to a number of rules question threads that have been started in this forum. If you're asking how different rules interact with each other, this is not the place for it. The only exception to that should be if PFS has a campaign rule that messes with the way the rules usually work.
Crafting being banned in PFS, how does a wizard's bonded object work?
Can I make a trip manoeuvre as someone gets up from prone in PFS?
With very few exceptions, if your question is just a rules question with 'in PFS' tacked onto the end of it, please move it to the rules forums where it belongs.

I agree wholeheartedly. The unfortunate problem is that most of those questions are being asked because people don't know if PFS has a houserule for how that particular rule works. And ensuring that no such houserule exists can either be done by (1) scouring various stickied posts, some elaborate search-fu, a thorough analysis of Additional Resources, checking various blog posts, and double-checking all of the above to ensure that a second ruling has not been issued which contradicts or changes the first; or (2) asking the enormously helpful people of the forum. It's no surprise new players opt to ask in the PFS forum, really.

I can sympathize with people not knowing that they shouldn't ask, or not knowing where to look for clarification. I'm not expecting these threads to go away, and I know why they are here.
However, no one should expect Mike Brock or any other PFS coordinator to make a special rule for PFS for matters that sometime have table variation. Rules questions about chakrams and sling staffs need to go through proper channels in the rules forum, and if there's a problem with one of the Pathfinder rules, then the answer is not a PFS campaign rule, but errata.

guys... if someone asks: "can I do X in PFS?" why not just answer him and move on? "Yes" or "No, because of special case rule XXX".
.
Telling someone to "Take it to the rules board" means he needs to wade thru the posts that say things like "Well, if you were in MY game I'd make you sit in the corner for even asking it" backed up with "It's actually required in every game I've played" to get to the one that says "you know, those bozos in PFS have some silly rule about that, but I don't remember what it is."
Why not just answer him?
If someone comes up to you at a CON and says "Where's the bathroom?" do you send him out to the registration area to ask at the information booth?
edit: or heck - if it offends you, just do what I do to posters that offend me, ignore him and the thread entirely. "Where's the bathroom?" - "nine sprechen sie English."

I personally hate the rules forum for PFS questions for a lot of the reasons nosig mentioned.
Asker: "How does X work in PFS?"
Random person 1: "You are abusing the system to try to do something like that. I would never allow it."
Random person 2: "The RAI obviously is X."
Random person 3: "Well, RAW could be X, but I think that it shouldn't be that way ^_^."
Random person 4: "No, the RAW clearly states in the flavor text that X."
It gets on my nerves because even when you say clearly "THIS IS FOR PFS," people just ignore you, and people who actually play PFS don't answer the question because they don't want to look at that forum either.

I agree. The users in the general discussion are general and you get idiots. Plus if you post it in the PFs forum you can get an official answer from mr brock much easier. So if he wants to keep rule question to the rules forum he is his own problem.
I try to ask for rules quotes for my answers. Because there are tons of misinformation on that forum
|
|
Additionally, there can be a lot of misinformation too because some/sometimes many confuse it with Suggestions/houseRules/Homebrew or have a misunderstanding themselves or with more difficult things don´t know it either. And PFS is another pair of shoes where campaign leaders ultimatively are the gurus, not single GM´s. What i think is really great, because so far every decision i encountered in this context prooved to be a good one, even if i perhaps did not like it in the first place.

Personally I think it's the moderator's role to work out if a thread is in the wrong place, nobody else's.
It's fair to bring up that trying to work your way around those rules posts to get to the real meatier posts is annoying too, though.
Having a "Pathfinder Society Rules Forum" would probably resolve the issues mentioned above, even if it does create Yet Another Forum with its own issues. It could make life a heck of a lot easier on PFS'ers too.
Do we see that many rules threads here?

all people who believe that questions should go to the rules forum, should go there and see that 80% of the people there have no idea of the specifics of pfs rules, and answer anyway. usually incorrectly as far as pfs specific rules are concerned.
if you have such issues with those questions being asked in the most appropriate place (this one), then maybe you should start a thread asking for a new forum for pfs specific rules, instead of complaining about perfectly legitimate questions being asked here.

I still actually have no idea how a gunslinger's critical confirm roll works, and my thread in the rules forum didn't get any response
Which thread is that? The only thread I can see has lots of responses, the vast majority of which agree that it's not possible to misfire your crit confirmation roll (which seems obvious to me). There are only one or two people who are confused.

Sorry I forgot I posted in someone else's thread.
Anyway Most people are saying "Well it can't be intended!" but aren't disagreeing with how it is written, which bothers me. They are trying to say it means something other than how it is written.
Also others saying that the shot hits but your gun is broken bother me more, haha

Or just do what I do. If the question hasn't been answered yet; answer it, link to the PFS GtOP and Additional Resources, and flag the post for movement to the rules forum (with a line at the bottom mentioning that it has been flagged because it's a general question).
For the most part the people who ask these questions don't *know* they should ask in the rules forum, and won't read this thread before posting.

This reminds me of the whole "reach weapons threaten on the second diagonal" issue that I was completely unaware that it had been ruled on until it came up in a game with Mike Brock running.
Several months ago, I wrote a rant about The difficulty of obtaining an [O]fficial ruling...

Maybe we should get a stickied topic placed at the top of the forum that points to where the Pathfinder special rules are located?
That post would link to the appropriate section as well as to the forum for discussing PFS rules questions and then say that this forum is for questions about generic Pathfinder rules -- which would basically be rules as written with no house rules if a PFS player is asking about something not specifically covered by the PFS documents.
|
David: We already have an FAQ and a sticky thread with message board clarifications, but it doesn't appear unless you click through to the specific subforum.
As an aside, I've noticed a lot of usernames that are in the format of firstname lastname threedigitnumber. Do you mind if I ask what all that's about?

Any time I make a new alias, it defaults to Patrick Harris ###. It just seems to be the way the system works.

I am guilty of some of the questions the OP cited and I am sorry to have annoyed you. I will try to explain why I ask about PFS rules here rather than on the Rules Forum and I hope you can empathize with my situation.
The Chakram question was mine. I asked here because I saw that people were discussing Chakrams in the rules forum but there were 30 different opinions and none of them actually said whether it was PFS legal or just Pathfinder legal or it was table specific. (Or more likely, I lost my patience and gave up on reading 30 responses.)
My question was as to whether or not I could use a whetstone on a Chakram. Perfectly valid as a question but some DMs wouldn't allow it at their table and some would and all I wanted was to know if PFS allowed it.
You see, I often don't care about secondary or tertiary opinions when I'm trying to construct a lvl. 1 character, I just want the rules and whether what I'm going to do is legal in the game I'm playing. My reason is that if I'm creating a new character its already confusing enough just to figure it out, without further confusion or insult being added into the mix.
Now, if I ask in the Rules Forum about PFS and someone tells me they wouldn't allow it in their homebrew game or they tell me that they think its cheesy and PFS is weak sauce, I'm going to have a response that says something like, "I don't care about your opinion, if I did, I'd have asked for it. I just want to know what the PFS rule is, that why I put PFS in the TITLE of the thread."
And the response I'll get will be "Don't be a jerk, Dude." Except when people hijack my posts to turn them into their own bash PFS thread or turn it into a "I think this is wrong and you are wrong for doing it," thread I get ticked off. Whereas here, I can ask a question, get a straightforward answer from most people. This usually means, I can move on with my day without my blood pressure going through the roof on this end of the screen, which is greatly appreciated.
See I can accept a 'table' ruling because I'm ok with playing by the rules. And to me PFS is just a really well organized table, with a lot of people playing at the same table and everyone here usually knows what the 'table' rules are. Where on the Rules Forum, its anybody's guess what sort of a response you'll get. So I apologize to some of you who are annoyed by my questions or those of other newbs like me but I hope you can understand why I am reluctant to go to the Rules Forum.
So, I will officially second or third the previous suggestion.
PFS Rules Forum, please. :-)

Here's the thing, just because you think the toilet is dirty does not mean it's okay to poop in the sink.
The problem is different forums are for different purposes and just because you don't like the type of responses you get (some are pretty horrid) does not mean the best solution to to hijack a different forum.
My suggestion is to use the rules forum, make it clear you're talking about PFS and ignore the people who are obnoxious.
There is a greasemonky scrip out there for ignoring individual paizo.com forum members, that may be helpful in your quest for answers.

There are definately things that can be covered in the rules forum and should, but there are also things that are unclear especially there and it´s totally legal to ask about them in a forum which is called Pathfinder Society General Discussion, because for that person it might be a general question.
It´s also a wise thing to do this, because here are a lot of people with much more experience, who also are much more in sync with the general direction of the campaign. So you could get pointed at things you otherwise perhaps would not find or see, which in turn provides involved GM´s and players with a better experience and less haggling time and might also reduce table variation.
I would consider using such a script to block other very rude, because essentially you disesteem another human and deny him the rights to have a bad say, make a mistake or even improve himself, which is a very bad attitude for christians and atheists alike and all other human beings.
If there are repeatedly real problems this boards have very good overseers.

The problem with this is that a lot of PFS people don't go to those forums, and you sometimes simply don't get an answer you're looking for.
Ignoring people is fine, but I'm more likely to actually get my question answered on this board.

so... when a newbie sits at your table and you discover that he has a PC with a problem because he went to the rule forum and got the wrong answer?
"Yeah, that scroll is at CL3, I created it at 3rd level. See, right here's where I paid the money to craft it..."
"Dude, you can't craft scrolls!"
"What? I asked on the board, and they went over the rules for the feat Scribe Scroll and everything..."
"Guy, why didn't you ask on the PFS board?"
"Ah, cause I didn't want to 'poop in the sink'?"
Yeah, this is going to work great....
One post on the PFS board - "How do I scribe a 1st level spell at Caster level 3?" nets him a different answer on the PFS board.
Kind of like asking the three ladies at the door of the CON "where's the bathroom?" and being directed to the Ladies room - Let's hope you don't go in to use it guy...

That's if you're lucky. Usually it's more like asking the three ladies, getting five different answers, all of them are Ladies Rooms, and then they proceed to fight you, each other, and a random passerby who just stopped by to tell you all that you are idiots and that the bathroom is right over there behind the door marked "Janitor's Closet."

yep, been there more times than I can count.
