Ranged Synthesist?

Advice

Firstly I know Synthesists are overpowered adn there is a reason that they have no ranged options in evolutions.

For the following idea feel free to
a) offer suggestions
b) offer a better alternative
c) deride the attempt and shoot the concept down in flames ...

The concept
A mobile artillery character
a synthesist weilding a crossbow/ballista or larger ( I realise bows are better, but it is easier to find a ballista over a +20 gargantuan mighty composite bow )

The build
Ranger 6 for crossbow mastery ( feat) and spells gravity bow and aspect of the falcon, and 6 skills per level.
Synthesist 14 for Huge size ( gargantuan with enlarge person) and crafting potential

the outcome
4 ranged attacks (bab 16) doing base weapon damage ( ballista gate breaker ) 6d8 + whatever feats

a couple of questions
is there a way of having a resizing weapon ?
would firearms be better for the build , what is the damage of a double hackbut anyway ?
what would be good feats ?

If you can start at level 11, get Improved Eldritch Heritage (Marid bloodline).

You now have a Su at-will line attack area of effect that does untyped damage and forces a save vs. blindness.

You now have a "ranged" Synthesist. :)

I am still surprised there isn't a spines/ needles evolution to give eidolon's ranged natural attacks.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Maybe paizo realized the eidolon is already good enough as-is?

You can just use a bow in any case, even grow a bunch of arms to shoot more than one bow or crossbow.

Thought of more arms but the two weapon penalties start racking up and the bigger size eidolon starts to get dex and to hit penalties. So it makes it harder to hit, maybe a firearm ?

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resize a weapon ? the whole enlarge person option does not work after the ammo leaves the weapon...

Gravity Bow.

Looking for a specific weapon enchantment similar to transformative (ultimate equipment.)

Got the gravity bow trying to make the weapon colossal. Huge for eidolon, Gargantuan for enlarge person and then gravity bow to colossal for 8d8 damage either at 100 ft range for gate breaker or 180 ft ( or 240ft if the size changes the range (light 80/heavy crossbow and light ballista 120/ heavy and gargantuan ballista 180/ colossal ballista 240 ) for a size equivalent ballista

You have plenty of ranged options.

You can have bows built for whatever size you are in your fused form. Or even hurl big rocks!

Or, I even hear that summoners have.....spells.

True enough about the spells, but the direct damage spells are very limited, I realise why, and to be honest I never even considered rock throwing , what would be the damage for a large rock ? (I am assuming 2 sizes smaller than the eidolon)

It would depend on the size of the missle plus your strength bonus.

Found it 2x slam damage +1.5x str 120' range, not bad.

Actually those rules only apply to the Rock Throwing monster ability. As far as I know, you cannot get that ability outside Giant Form (and that is 2d10 at the highest).

For actual PC rock throwing, the best bet is the barbarian hurling rage powers. With them, you can throw rocks dealing damage equal as a falling object of that size.

So if you want to utilize rocks, you'll need to have at least two levels of barbarian to get the lesser hurling rage power. That would allow you to throw a huge boulder for 6d6+bonusses as a full round action (not that viable).
Slightly better is a barb 12/synth 8, enlarged to huge with the greater hurling power, throwing a gargantuan rock for 8d6+bonusses (better, but not really comparable to your other options).

My suggestion is to do what was earlier suggested and have the weapon crafted for what ever size your going to be. Or walk a round carrying a cannon.
