60% of the time, it works EVERY time.

Chew on that for awhile.

Ugh, that smell! Where did you pull these numbers from?

I don't know, Bruunwald - I heard that 40% of the time it fails 100% of the time.

Those numbers taste like panther...

They've done "studies."

76% of statistics are made up on the spot.

There is a 50 / 50 chance that he will make it through. But there is only a 10 percent chance of that. Movie?

statistically speaking, the probability of us existing is nil

That's rather like finding the winner of a lottery after the fact, then exclaiming how fantastically unlikely it was for that particular person to have won.

Statistics are EVIL! Never speak of this HERESY called statistics again!!

Bad statistics are evil. That is why you must actually learn statistics. Funny how that works, an advanced field of mathematics that everyone doesn't understand without studying... Who'd'a thunk?

I struggled through a statistics class and got a C-.

I was very happy when it was over, because it meant I could start forgetting all of the stuff that I had (just barely) learned.

[bubble bubble bubble] helped.

Precisely. I have done enough studying on them to know it is a bloody difficult field that is so often misused. What good statistics can let you do is finding the most probable meaning of the tons of numbers you slog through, which is why statistics is used as a truthspeaking tool... But many or most of those numbers you see are put there by people who do NOT know enough statistics.

I had to do statistics as well. Hated every second of it, although i could see the utility. It remains astonishingly easy to misuse and misunderstand.

Yup...I had stats as an undergrad, learned enough to realize most people aren't trained enough to (correctly) draw the conclusions they do, and then promptly forgot most of it.

I think you'd really have to do it almost full-time.

I will respond in seriousness then, since my comment was taken as such. I, funnily enough, am a math major. I have had repeated courses in varying degrees of difficulty studying statistics. However, I will point out that it still remains my least favorite form of "math." I understand it well enough, including the various theories behind proper statistical selection, application, and the typical misuse of it. I do not dislike it because I misunderstand it. I dislike it because I DO understand it.

IMHO, statistics is not math by the purest definition. It more closely relates to a science than a mathematics field.

Anything with a sigma makes me cry...

It is just that most who talk about how evil statistics are have no knowledge of it at all.

It's all greek to me! *drum roll*

And stats is fun! Apart from the parts with the greek since I don't especially enjoy the theory... And I'm not a fan of all the computer coding that ends up being necessary for it... And sometimes explaining results to people can be a bit dicey... But actually using stats to find stuff out can be fun!

We had to do our own surveys and statistical analysis.

I remember that I was trying to find the connections between the following two statements:

I enjoy altered states of consciousness.

I am interested in a career in law enforcement.

The curve I got was pretty weird.

(Would use more technical language, but, as I said, I promptly forgot it all.)
