Hey, folks!
I'm wondering if any of you know a (preferrably PFS-legal) way to create a 1st-level Ranger who has an animal companion. Are there any feats/archetypes/etc. that would accomplish this?
I thought about the possibility of taking Boon Companion to raise my effective Druid level, but I *think* the correct interpretation is that since the Ranger doesn't actually get Hunter's Bond until 4th level, I would not be able to take the feat until then.
Thanks for your advice!

The easiest way is just to start out with a level of druid instead of ranger. The animal companion levels will stack (assuming you pick a valid ranger companion).
I think you are not limited to the ranger's animal companion list if you have a level of druid. However, unless you take Boon Companion, your animal companion will not increase until you hit 4th level ranger. So your AC will be the same from Druid 1 to Druid 1/Ranger 3.
Just because you take levels in ranger (even all but one), doesn't limit your choice of druid animal companions.
Animal Companions (table)
Class Level: This is the character's druid level. The druid's class levels stack with levels of any other classes that are entitled to an animal companion for the purpose of determining the companion's statistics.

Ultimately, what I'm really looking for is a pet-focused character who isn't magic and is based around a hunting dog. That's why I'd rather not go with Druid, since I don't see this character as a spellcaster. I hadn't thought about Cavalier; that sounds like it would work conceptually, but I'm looking for a companion rather than a mount.
I suppose that buying a normal dog and then just waiting a while would work, but it seems a bit disappointing.

Check out the Huntmaster cavalier from Animal Archive. It sounds like exactly what you're looking for.

This has been discussed elsewhere with no definitive resolution one way or another (that I know of).

Mike Brock has ruled that you can't expand a class's available companion list by dipping into another class. So it's not legal in PFS.

Actually yes it does. If the animal you pick isn't allowed by the ranger class, than the ranger class levels do not stack. They only stack if the animal is a valid choice for BOTH.
If you want to be a first level ranger with an animal companion the only choice is falconer, but you won't be happy if you're expecting a mega combat monster from it.
