Simple question. I'm running Rise of the Runelords. We are in Sandpoint. How much money could be pick pocketed from a commoner's coin purse? Maybe the equivilant of 2 meals? Or a minor item price?

Thanks!

Silvers and coppers. Alternatively, decide what that commoner went out to buy- lunch? a hammock? some more blankets?- then find the appropriate cost for that in the Goods and Services price section. Add spare change as appropriate.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Use a random chart, there should be lots online. For example:

Ill gotten goods

"What Have I Got in My Pocket?" from Footprints #2

Pick pocket result chart from this blog

Dragon 164 has article called "What Has He Gots In His Pocketses?" by Ed Greenwood -- but the 'table' is only 20, very detailed, 'adventure hook' items.

The awesome donjon.bin.sh site has a nice d20 pickpocket loot generator among tons of other generators

Here's a nifty little program

Why commoners? A clever pickpocket should target wealthy looking NPCs or at least to a little reconnaissance on marks, ie a peasant returning from the market , a merchant, a gambler.... He would not target dirt poor people.

If a PC wants to go pickpocketing tell him to learn profession pickpocket and make profession checks as normal.
It even simulates the fact that you can pickpocket better targets when your skill rises.

Nice links! Dotted for future harvesting.

you could just use the sleight of hand check to avoid notice (DC based on openness and welcome of the town and relative wealth of neighborhood) and also use the outcome as a profession roll.

My personal opinion is not to let PC rogues get 'out of hand' with pick-pocketing, the amount of trouble they cause for will escalate faster than the value of anything they steal.
