Dragon Animal Companions?

Sovereign Court

Has anyone ever done starting stats/advancements for wyvern or pseudodragon animal companions? (Heck- even a faerie dragon)

I understand the problems with having a companion with higher INT than normal.

Not really a problem, paladins have that. I'd also call it companions, as saying Animal companion for a dragon type might be confusing.

Simplest might be using Dragonne, Drakkensteed(3.5 dragon animal), or scaling a Pseudodragon up in size till it's medium. Giving wolf breath weapon and flight could work as a reskin as well when combined with dragon type.

Due to all new abilities and immunities, have class count as 2-4 levels lower to compensate all the boons.

A wolf wouldn't make a very good dragon. 1 natural attack with trip is much different than the what, 6 natural attacks dragons get?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

There are already stats for Improved Familiars:
Faerie Dragon
Pseudodragon
and Tidepool Dragon

It certainly wouldn't be game breaking to use those statblocks for an animal companion, at least in my opinion.

Have you seen any advancements for them?

For a wyvern, I'd say give it a 7th level advancement. Before it attains that advancement, give it +2 dex, lowered con and str, make it medium and take away it's poison. Make it large at 7th and pump it's str and con (although you might want to lower it for balance, maybe) back to normal limits and give it back the poison.

Other than that, make it follow the Animal companion thing for skills, hit die, saves, feats, and bab.

I would think that this would work out, but I'm no GM.

Super genius games guide to the Dragon Rider Has stats for a dragon that is similar to an animal companion. However there are significant differences between a dragon rider and a druid, I wouldnt advise a straight port to the druid ranger. Though the dragon rider has stacking rules for classes with animal companions, so you could theoetically take one level of dragon rider and the rest in whatever it is you wanted the animal companion for.

There's also the hippogriff statted up as AC somewhere here as a blog post.
The bonus bestiary (available as a free download at Paizo had the dragonne as companion with advancement statted up.
Maybe those might serve as a template for similar companions.

Paizo has a player supplement about this at http://paizo.com/products/btpy9aov?Dragon-Companion-Handbook Why get a wyvern or pseudo dragon? Why not just get a real one?

Im working with my gm on my animal companion bonding with a Crystaline Dragon using the Draconic Companion feat from the handbook above.

My druid is going to find other druids and be like, oh what kind of pet do you have? a bear? Yea? I have a dragon.
