Hound Master Archetype

Rules Questions

I'd like to play the Hound Master archetype, but ultimately, I only want to have the hound as my companion. I don't want the other things that come with the archetype (Pack Tactics, Expert Handler, Go for the Throat, Kill Command). I'd rather have the hound as the companion that levels up as I do, and gain the other Cavalier abilities as I gain power. Does anyone see problems with that? For some reason, I think I'm breaking a rule, but I don't see it.

Check out the new animal archive book released last month. It has the official version of this archetype that might suit you better.

Also might want to go the feat route to gain an animal companion. Cha 13 + skills focus (knowledge nature) + eldritch heritage (sylvan) + boon companion.

I had a chance to check out the Huntmaster archetype. This archetype allows the cavalier to gain two animal companions, splitting the effective levels. However, it limits the companions to a hawk or a hound. Do you think there would be an issue with allowing a horse too?

At that point, you're just a regular cavalier. The point of the hunt master was to have a non-horse cav. If you want a horse, go with a different archetype.

Nah, I think the split would work fine for a horse/hound. Ride around on the horse normally, then take the hound into non-horse environments.

Thanks to both of you.
