when time runs out...

Ran Cultist's Kiss last night at a game shop, and we had to wrap up and get out prematurely, during the final fight. In my haste, I ruled mission failure since the fight was going in the direction of a TPK.

Spoiler:
Nobody had dropped yet, but one was cursed with -4 to all rolls, and another was blinded and effectively out of it, all 4 characters were level 7, the BBEG's were at full hp still, and the two uncursed/blinded characters were being played by 11/13 year olds that were not making great decisions. I was being nice by using all spells and the whip up to that point, but pretty soon I'd have started with the slams for level drain.

But on my way home, I reconsidered, and thought, isn't the rule that if most of the scenario was completed when time runs out, it's considered mission success and everybody gets the XP and the PP for success?

I think you should break down in parts, as the XP is not based on the same thing as PP.

You have to go with what the scenario presents under success conditions.

Cultist's kiss:
However this mission turned out, it has almost certainly become a lot messier than Sheila Heidmarch anticipated. Nonetheless, as long as the PCs were able to retrieve the cache of correspondence from the inner sanctum and learned that a plot is afoot to resurrect Krune, the mission is a success, and each PC receives 1 Prestige Point.

If they had done that then they get a PP.

So in summary:
1. Did they get through 3+ encounter areas? If yes, they get 1 xp.
2. Did they achieve what was in the success conditions blurb? If yes, they get one fame/pp
3. Did they complete their faction mission? If yes, they get one fame/pp
4. Gold for encounters completed/defeated

It would probably be a mission failure if they had not completed the main mission and looked like they wouldn't have succeeded, but they would still receive XP if they completed enough encounters, and PP for the faction missions, as well as gold for each encounter they did complete.

You get XP for completing 3 encounters in the scenario.

You get PP (season 3 and 4 scenarios) for completing your faction mission for 1 and if you meet the scenario success conditions for the other.

In your situation, it sounds like they should have gotten the scenario XP, but not the success condition PP. The faction mission PP completed up to that point would still be valid.

So, it sounds like the players should have gotten 1 XP and 0 or 1 PP, depending on whether they finished their faction missions when time was called. Gold would have been based on what encounters they dealt with and found the rewards for.

finish it later if you can.

I think the Scenario Success is a GM call. If you believe that the group would TPK then fail. If you believe that they had a way of getting the papers out and reporting (even if not the entire group) then success. The dead party members could always have been Raised later.

Or as Andrew mentions, you don't have to finish the game in one sitting if everyone (or even just most) can attend a follow up session to finish it.

But since we have the same Avatar, I think its easy for folks to perhaps immediately jump to that conclusion.

Well just like a copyright I have to defend my name. I am the difficult obstinate one, and you are more level headed calmer one.

In his best commentator's voice:"So, Jiggy, how do you think these two will match up? Do you think Andrew's Venture powers will tip the scale in his favor? And what about his stars? He does have three times the star power as Finlanderboy, of course Andrew has been around the block a few times, and his age might become a factor as well. Finlanderboy is fresh and that could definitely tip the scale in his favor. What do you think?
