How to give a sorcerer a special item

Advice

Playing a homemade game and the party dynamics are: Ranger, Barb, Sorcerer and a Cleric.

My party likes a game where they feel as though they are epic characters and they create them to reflect that. Personally, I have no problem with this and in fact if it makes them enjoy it much more, more power to them.

However, Each of the party characters have a special trait to them:
-Barb is a ogre that has massive str at lvl 2
-Ranger is a demon hunter that in the process of hunting demons helps a lost soul return to heaven
-Cleric found an intelligent glaive in a abandoned temple of his god
-and the sorcerer....

I was going to just give him a low level rod but i don't think it'll be as special.

does anybody have any suggestions on how i can make this sorcerer special? Its a sorcerer with the blood line arcane

How about giving him a unique, scaling metamagic rod? Maybe something with charges per day that he can use to add any metamagic at the cost of a number of charges equal to the level adjustment of the metamagic? I could see it having something like 1/2 his level in charges per day.

Scalable is a wand that allows him to use his Bloodline powers more often. Say, another three times a day? It could also grant him one of the bloodline feats.

Does he use a familiar or a bonded item? If familiar, give him a more powerful and special version of what he picked. If item, make it special somehow, made out of “orichalum, which is are hard as adamantine, and has this special ability…”

Arcane is such a boring bloodline, tho.

Perhaps something he can charge to let him cast a lower level spell he knows at-will. Perhaps something like a spell two lower than the highest ones he can cast (minimum 1), capped at a level 3 spell? So he could cast say Magic Missile at will at his full caster level at level 1, but if he wished he could "attune" the rod to a 2nd level spell once he snagged 4th level spells, so he could have at-will Create Pit or summat, up to a maximum at 5th level spells he could cast stuff like Fireball without using any spell slots.

Would be an interesting item to have, and being capped at 3rd level spells wouldn't be too busted. If he wanted to up it later perhaps you could allow him a way to "unlock the restrictions" on the item to raise the cap at higher levels.

All amazing suggestions, and I agree Drdeth, Arcane is so droll. Its what he wanted to play tho. This is what I'm thinking:

(Scaling) Rod of the Ancients

This orichalum rod has a series of rings that allow the user to rotate the rings to perform a desired effect. By expelling one charge the user can:

Reroll any concentration check, checks to overcome spell resistance, or saving throw. You must take the second result even if it is lower. Treat this as a immediate action.

Cast any spell and apply any metamagic feat to it as long as the user meets the prerequisites. This does not use up a slot of a higher level.

Spontaneously Cast a spell at 2 levels lower then your highest caster level. You may ue this ability even though you have used all your spell level slots for the day.

You cannot use more than 2 charges at a time for a single effect.

Charges = 1/2 Sorcerer level + CHA Modifier?

In my game, the DM gave out items to everyone in the party, my sorcerer got a box filled with a swirling energy.

It allowed me to learn a spell of a reasonable level from outside of the Sor/Wiz list.

That would be a nice perk and make them feel unique.

You might want to reword the first one as "Apply any metamagic feat the user meets the prerequisites for to a spell being cast. This does not use up a slot of a higher level." The way you have it now, I thought it let them use it like a wand/rod combo instead of a super-rod. (Be careful with the metamagics, too - might want to limit it to Core and UM or something.) You might want to consider having it eat charges equal to the level increase and adjusting the second to last clause.

Other than that, looks pretty good. Is that charges count per day? If so, this is going to be an insanely large boost to his power at higher levels.

A silk armour, especially embroidered for that character.

I was gonna do something along those lines and have the sorc be able to learn an extra spell or be able to cast an extra spell. I had the box from Doom3 in my head for some reason. Coincidence?

I changed the wording to:

Cast a spell and apply any of the following metamagic feat to it:
Silent Spell
Quicken Spell
Heightened Spell
Persistent Spell

To activate this, Charges need to be expelled based on the slot that needs to be used for the desired metamagic feat.
- Spontaneously Cast a spell at 2 levels lower than your highest caster level. You may use this ability even though you have used all your spell level slots for the day. Charges are used from the rod dependant on the lvl spell that is being casted.

to OPed? or maybe dull it down more?

It could also be a series of smaller items (that he'd have to search for, maybe even a quest) that grow stronger when its brethren are used / worn.

For example, you could have 2 - 10 rings that each do something pretty nifty, but they get stronger when the other rings are worn. Kind of like the Mandarin from Iron Man comic books. Like, one ring could give him the use of scorching ray once per day. If he were to wear another ring, perhaps it increases the damage of scorching ray or perhaps wearing another ring gives him 1 more additional use.

Or perhaps it is a rod. Maybe a rod that could convert unused spells of the day (up to a limit of course) into extra DC equal to the levels stored for 1 spell. Perhaps using the rod in conjunction with a spell will allow that one spell to bypass resistances or immunities once per day.

Lots of fun options, so either way, good luck.

well, what does Shelly Sorcorer do? What's the epic hook? Arcane is droll. . . .how about a sub-text story line? Does the character have a personal heirloom? A thing? A Thing of THEM? (13th warrior). Maybe Rangy Demondeath has to help Shelly realize that something Shelly has the Demons want . . . . permament MISLEAD so it does not detect as magic. Just an idea.

Hell, you know what might be the easiest and simplest way to make the Sorcerer more interesting? Perhaps let him be Crossblooded without the downsides (less spells known). Most Bloodline Arcana and powers aren't that supar awesome that having two would screw with balance, and if you limited him just to picking one or the other of each Bloodline's "free" spells you'd be aight.

That gets rid of the boring ass Arcane Bloodline flavor without getting rid of the nifty/powerful Arcane Bloodline Arcana/Powers.
