Do Improved Familiars not give skill / save bonuses?

Rules Questions

I have a Wizard/Harrower who picked up a Lyrakien as an improved familiar. I've been mostly happy with the spell-like abilities she has, but I was wondering if I'm just missing out on the skill/save bonus I would have gotten if I'd just stuck with a normal familiar, or if there are rules for this kind of thing.

If the improved familiar doesn't list a save/skill bonus, then it doesn't offer a save/skill bonus. I'm not aware of one that does, other than the standard Alertness feat that comes from having any familiar.

Hmm. That definitely alters my perception of that feat's value. Thanks for the info.

Same here. It's a powerful feat for people that want a familiar that can use a wand, and it's a fun feat for people that encounter a potential Improved Familiar while adventuring. It's not really useful for those that are stuck in between, that just want a better version of a normal familiar.

I kind of wish Improved Familiar had the option of applying the Advanced simple template to your base familiar. I'd scoop that up real quick.

A celestial animal familiar would give any bonuses the base animal did.

lyrakien familiars constant ability to detect both magic and evil(not spells, they are constantly on) are by themselves worth losing a bonus to a skill or save.

All familiars, improved or otherwise, have your skills and therefore can assist you with skill checks if this is the bonus to skills you are referring to.
