Varient Channeling / elemental channel

So when a Stonelord Paladin gains Elemental Channel at 4th level, can I choose to use Varient Channeling just so it has some use on my non-elemental comrades (say, the Disease category of healing ability damage).

OR, would it effect Elementals only? And I assume it would have no effect to injure undead at all.

Earth Channel (Su): "At 4th level, a stonelord gains Elemental Channel (earth) as a bonus feat, which she may activate by spending two uses of her lay on hands ability, using her paladin level as her effective cleric level. This ability replaces channel positive energy."

Variant Channeling: "A variant channeling either modifies positive channeled energy when used to heal or modifies negative energy when used to harm."

Since you're not channeling positive or negative energy, I think it cannot be modified by variant channeling.
