How could you legally cast expeditious retreat on a horse?

Rules Questions

Expeditious retreat is a target: you spell.
The horse is just a normal horse, though I'm open to ideas to change it to make this work.

So can it be done?

It has range personal so if the horse was a alchemist 1, bard 1, inquisitor 1, magus 1, sorcerer/wizard 1, summoner 1 or had domain Domain azata (chaos, good) 1, exploration 1. Or if it had a high use magic device check and a magic item to cast with.

(in other words no)

Can alchemist bottle expeditious retreat then give it to the horse using infusions?

Well if you had some way to take the horse as a familiar you can cast spells with a target of YOU on it.

The horse in question would have to be either.

a familliar

an animal companion

an eidolon masquerading as a horse.

Is there some reason why the horse couldn't just be fed a potion of the spell in question?

The spell in question is a personal spell, and therefore cannot be made into a potion.

That said, an alchemist's infusion would work indeed.

Unfortunately for an animal companion you can only cast "You" spells on your companion that come from a class that gets an animal companion and Expeditious Retreat isn't on a Druids or Rangers list.

This is quite a ridiculous solution, but I *think* that it might work.
Magic Jar or Dominate Monster the horse, then cast Silent Spell+Still Spell Expeditious Retreat.

A slightly less insane option would be to use the spell creation rules to research a new spell of the same text but with a target of a mount.
* This would cost 1000gp and 1 week of work
* Success would require a Knowledge+Spellcraft Check, DC20 for both
* You could make that check easier by adding in 2 research assistants (2x Aid Anothers, so +4 to your roll)
* You could make the DC lower by requiring a Focus (I'd say that a Mithril Horseshoe might qualify as a rare focus for a -5), adding research materials during the process, etc.

As long as you're not PFS, I'd think that following the spell creation rules should work fine...

just make some horseshoes of expeditious retreat, constant effect.

A Sylvan Sorcerer can get an animal companion and cast Expeditious Retreat on it.

Indeed they can!

Somebody already said it but I'll restate it: Take two levels of Alchemist, take the Infusion Discovery. Remember to get Expeditious Retreat as one of your Extracts. Perhaps Mage Armor as another to beef up Mr. Ed.

Improved Share Spells feat from the APG does not include the limiting text about not being able to share spells across classes. It says simply, "ANY non-instantaneous spell (but not any spell-like ability) you cast on yourself can also affect a creature bonded to you ..."

I emphasized the "ANY" BTW.

So a druid/wizard/MT, for example, with a horse animal companion and Improved Share Spells could share an expeditious retreat (at half duration).

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Then again, how much do you want to separate yourself from the rest of your party so that you can serve as a nice solo target?

My entire party ended up buying Horseshoes of Speed to accomplish this.

Depends on what you are running from!

"I don't have to be the fastest. I just have to be faster than you."

Right...you don't have to swim faster than the shark...just faster than your buddy.

This. Precisely this. Make an infusion or whatever it's called with your second level discovery and bottle it, and make the horse drink it.

If you can.

Scarab Sages

A cleric with the Animal and Exploration domains could have an animal companion and cast Expeditious Retreat on it. If you could find a deity who offered both Animal and Azata domains, that would work as well.
