I was adjusting my Druid to have a bear animal companion instead of a domain spell. Now my question is that with animal companions if I am reading it correctly get a D8 HD per level so using the hit point table they would get the average of 5 per level just like the druid himself. Am I correct in this assumption? as I was using hero lab to do the math for me it put in 4 HP for one level and 5 for another so it confused me.

Actually your bear would get average hit points per level, which with d8 is 4.5 HP per level. At odd levels, this is rounded down, so that's why it looks like 4 and then 5.

Also remember that your bear doesn't get a hit dice every level, instead gaining hit dice at some levels and not others based on the animal companion table.

Even though this is a PFS druid it is still 4.5 rounded down so 4 every level?

The hit points are rounded down after adding them together. So one hit die would put it at 4.5 hit points, which rounds down to 4, then the next would put it at 9 hit points, an increase of 5. This is why you see an increase of 4 some levels and an increase of 5 at others.

I don't understand why it isn't 5 at every level though, like the d8 hit die classes.

It's 4.5 HP per HD, rounded down. so, in this case, 4.5 x 8 = 36 HP. When the AC levels up you have to recalculate the HPs, not just add to them. So at 9HD you would recalculate 4.5 x 9 = 40.5 = 40 HPs. Hope this helps clarify things a little.

It's not 5 every level because that rule is only for PLAYER characters. Companions are considered NPCs, and all NPCs use the average for their hit points, even at 1st level.

I was about 70% sure that I read somewhere that PFS companions and edilons got the 5 per level just like a PC.
But I can't find it now, so maybe I am dreaming.

Nope, companions get average. Same thing with Eidolons, which is one of the most common things that Summoner players do incorrectly when making PFS summoners.

From the PFS FAQ:

How do I determine hit points for my animal companion?

Animal companions receive average hit points per hit die. For d8, the average is 4.5. Multiply 4.5 times the number of hit dice your animal companion has and round down. Recalculate hit points for your companion each time it gains additional hit dice. After its hit points are calculated, add in appropriate bonuses from its Constitution modifier, feats, and so on.

I'm wrong, again. {sigh}

What about companions with the celestial template (celestial servant) that are now considered Magical Beasts? Are they d10 base creatures and therefore get 5hp a level?

No. Their type changes from animal to magical beast, but other than that, it follows the celestial template located on page 294 of the Bestiary.
