Guided Weapon enhancement.

Ok, I have read every thread about guided weapon enhancement. I checked additional resources. And I have not come to a conclusion about this. So could I get a official response on if this is legal and what type of weapon it can be placed on.

Curse of the Crimson Throne Player’s Guide, Equipment: all equipment on pages 12–13 (except hide shirt); Feats: Acadamae
Graduate, Crossbow Mastery

So this is saying that everything is legal except fr the equipment and the feats. Which would mean that guided is a legal enhancement.

Now this is what it says about guided weapon.
Guided Weapon
Aura moderate evocation; CL 7th
Slot weapon quality; Price +1 bonus
Description
A weapon with the guided property allows its wielder to use
his instinct when striking blows with it. Attacks from a guided
weapon generally don’t strike hard, but they strike at precisely
the right moment to maximize damage if in the hands of
a particularly wise wielder. A character who attacks with a
guided weapon modifies his attack rolls and weapon damage
rolls with his Wisdom modifier, not his Strength modifier.
This modifier to damage is not adjusted for two-handed
weapons or off-hand weapons—it always remains equal to
the wielder’s Wisdom modifier. A guided weapon may be
wielded as a normal weapon, using Strength to
modify attack and damage rolls, but this goes
against the weapon’s nature and
imparts a –2 penalty on all attack
rolls made in this manner.

In the book it has a npc using it on a crossbow. So it could be a melee or ranged weapon as far as I can see. Sure would be nice to have an official answer on it to put it to bed so to speak.

The weapon enhancement is not on pages 12-13, or indeed in that player's guide at all. It's from the 3.5 book AP #10 CotCT4: A History of Ashes

Here is what the Additional Resources has to say about Curse of the Crimson Throne:

Quote:

Curse of the Crimson Throne

Pathfinder Adventure Path #9: "Escape from Old Korvosa"

Equipment: all equipment on page 83
Curse of the Crimson Throne Player's Guide

Equipment: all equipment on pages 12–13 (except hide shirt); Feats: Acadamae Graduate, Crossbow Mastery

A History of Ashes is not listed here, so the enhancement is not legal.

The Archives of Nethys do not list it as a valid ranged weapon enhancement either, so I can only assume that the rules specify it as melee only and that the NPC is in error or breaking the rules.

I don’t see why this needs clarification.

If additional resources allow it and you own the source then you can use it.

If the particular ability doesn’t specify whether it can be used on ranged or melee, then it clearly can be used on both within common sense. This isn’t the Throwing or Returning ability, so you don’t have to worry about whether this can be placed on an amulet of mighty fists and what the implications of throwing your fist are.

EDIT: Ninja'd by Cheapy. I disagree with his assessment on ranged vs. melee, but I do agree, if the source the enhancement is in, is not a legal source per additional resources, then this enhancement is not legal.

I don't think so. You are confused about how the additional resources states legal vs non-legal options from books. ONLY the equipment on pages 12-13 (except hide shirts) and the feats Acadamae Graduate and Crossbow Mastery are legal for play.

One of the posts you ran across when you searched all the threads might have been mine from last night.

No, it's not legal in PFS. Outside PFS, though, it's great for a Zen Archer!!

Or a standard (non Mysterious Stranger or Buccaneer) gunslinger

1 person marked this as a favorite.

In regards to melee vs. ranged, this is something I was a bit unsure about when placing this particular enhancement in the Archives. The only example of its use was on a melee weapon (Shadowcount Sial's spiked chain). Not sure which NPC was using it on a crossbow, the Cinderlander (main NPC with a crossbow) does not have that property on it.

Based on the text, it allows the wielder to use Wisdom instead of Strength, and talks about modifications for two-handed or off-hand weapons. This pointed more towards a "Melee only" quality than both.

As it was (and still is not) legal for PFS, I was satisfied with storing it as a melee quality. It is debatable if that was the intent, but individual GMs can allow it for ranged if they wish (though with the Zen Archer, I strongly advise caution... heheh). Personally, I feel as if it is *far* too strong of a quality to allow for a +1, especially on ranged weapons. It's already pretty amazing as a +1 for a melee-themed cleric.
