Pope to Retire..End of the World in sight.

Off-Topic Discussions

W8ith the announcement today that Pope Benedict is to retire from the Papacy at the end of this month the prospect of the next Pope being the last rears its ugly head.

As this Pope was 'Glory of the Olive' according to the Prophecies of St Malachy then the next is going to be 'Petrus Romanus and oversee the destruction of Rome and the Dissolution of the Catholic Church.

Just thought I'd mention it.

The Exchange

yay

Been waiting for the end of the papacy

Wonder how the church would behave without a pope.

Ahh my ancient masters, everything is as it was foreseen. Soon your time will come again.

While an uncommon event (only 10 popes have resigned in the last twenty centuries, though the number changes a bit depending on the specifics), it is perfectly backed by Canon Law and a very reasonable course of action in circumstances when the leadership of the Church might begin to falter. Though the matter of Papal Resignation was confusing in the earlier centuries (as there was no clear jurisprudence on the matter), Pope Saint Celestine V made it formal and official for the Pontifex Maximus to resign.

I can only imagine how hard it must have been for His Holiness to make this decision. Then again, it is well-known that he has been suffering from a series of problematic ailments for quite a while now and that a potential resignation has been rumoured several times.

From what I understand, the resignation will take place the 28 and the Conclave will be meeting between 15 and 30 days after. If all goes well, we should have a new pope before Easter. Benedict XVI will then retire into a life of meditation within one of the Vatican monasteries, in the manner of Pope John XVIII.

My prayers go to His Holiness and to the Cardinal Electors. Ecclesiae Aeterna aeternaliter permanere.

Does anyone know why the Prophecies in wikipedia reads as:

wikipedia wrote:

Petrus Romanus, qui

paſcet oues in mul-
tis tribulationibus:
quibus tranſactis ci-
uitas ſepticollis di-
ruetur, & Iudex tre
mdus iudicabit po
pulum ſuum. Finis.

I get the long s'es, but why the ~ over the e in the second last line?

As someone who studied Latin for my BA, I can tell you that it is not a character utilized in standard Latin. It might be a relic of church Latin.

I'll be mentally singing Tim Minchin's The Pope Song in my head all day long.

funny things wit prophecies, they never happen how one thinks......

I hold no trust in such things.......

For those who care, the "ẽ" is a medieval short form for "en". So the word is "mendus" (mistake)...

...and I'm the only one who cares.

No one linked Zlad yet?

Hey! I care!

Also, it's not "mendus." It's "tremendus." That's where they get "dread" for "dread judge" in the translation. The author ran out of space on the line, but didn't want to waste paper and didn't utilize a hyphen or other mark to reflect that they were linked.

To be fair, the Romans didn't even use spaces.

I knew I should have helped Carmen Sandiego steal the Vatican when I was there in '98.

I graciously accept the nomination.

He never should have been made pope after that letter he sent while head of the office of the doctrine of the faith. Hopefully the next pope will correct that.

What letter was that?

Even if you go by the assumption that the prophecy is in any way valid...there are an indeterminate number of popes between Glory of the Olive and Peter the Roman.

Could be 0...could be 280...could be...any number.

I'd guess the one in which he told the bishops that sex abuse was to be handled in-house, not by the authorities -- and that anyone who blabbed would be excommunicated. Quick link

this letter reminding folks that this letter was still in effect: basically telling priests to run out the clock on the statute of limitations before cooperating with secular authorities.

I think that we need to pray for the Roman Pontiff and his successors.

Wow! Lazy monks! :) Okay, that makes so much more sense.

I think God has made his views on the leadership of the catholic church clear... =)

Oh yeah... the prophecy of the popes was written down after a vision someone had in the twelfth century, IIRC. Whatever you think of it, the final piece was added in the nineteenth century.

P.S. Seriously, the fact that lightning strikes St Peter's can't be exactly once in a lifetime, right?
