Imps, but what about Imp Consulars?

My wizard Manny the Magnificent is getting up there in levels (he's one away from fifth!), and I'm planning ahead. He's definitely grabbing Improved Familiar, and I have in mind to grab an imp; however, I'm most interested in grabbing an imp consular. You see, Manny's familiar is currently a viper called Mr. Slithers, and I would prefer if he didn't notice the change too much. Imps can only turn into rats, while consulars can turn into vipers. They also get wicked telepathy! :D

Anyway, I'm just making sure that this is allowed in PFS. It's in the Bestiary, but I have no idea if I'm missing out on some exception that would prevent it. I don't want to waste an entire level not having an imp if there's no point in waiting until level 8 for the better one anyway.

You do realise Imp's are evil right? and Devils. But most importantly Evil.

Thats right... Evil.

So?

Eh. He's not the type to be bothered by things like that. He's much more concerned with getting credit for things and acquiring fame. An imp would probably promise stuff like that, and also be useful in combat.

I have heard talk of necromancers with undead minions, so as long as just the familiar is evil I don't think its a problem....

Dark Archive

Hero Lab claims they are not availbale to PFS players. As for whay, I can't say.

I don't think you can get an Imp Consular with Improved Familiar. However, you could take the Diabolist prestige class at level 10, and gain a Imp Animal Compaion, that would be able to turn into a tiny viper if you choose that ability as a bonus trick. However, I think it would turn Improved Familiar into a dead feat at that point, but the imp would be considerably more badass.

Here's the information on imp consulars:

Quote:
One in every thousand imps possesses the ability to communicate telepathically with creatures within 50 feet and the power to change its form into that of any Small or Tiny animal, as per the spell beast shape II. These imp consulars are highly prized by powerful devils, who send them to serve their favored minions or to corrupt mortals with great destinies. An imp consular can be summoned via the Improved Familiar feat, but only by a spellcaster of 8th level or higher. Diabolists tell of other breeds of imps with similarly specialized abilities, but if such creatures truly exist they are an especially rare lot.

This is on the imp page, 78.

If this is not allowed because it's not called out explicitly in Additional Resources, then I don't see how someone can get access to a Lyrakian Azata or Brownie, both of which are called out in the FAQ page but not explicitly allowed in Bestiary II's Additional Resources entry.

It would be nice to have an updated list of which Improved Familiars are and are not allowed, and which require boons.

Actually, why not just take it at 6th? The skill requirements are 5 or lower and the roleplay requirements are waived for PFS, so as long as you're LN and speak Infernal, it's the easiest way to get an Imp. I also think the AC Imp is a better deal than the IF Imp. Plus you can keep your little viper in your pocket for whichever skill bonus it gives you and have an Imp on hand for combat and/or roleplay.

Dark Archive 4/5

Diabolist can't be taken, according to previous forum posts, until the caster is capable of casting the spell. That's not a roleplay requirement, and a scroll will not suffice.

Anyway, I'm hoping for comments on what familiars are and are not allowed. I'll admit I'm a little confused as to why a Brownie from Bestiary 2 might be allowed, but not an Imp Consular from Bestiary 1.

Is there a link to that? It directly informs a PC I'm building.

Edit: Never mind, I found it. But this is ancient. It's by Joshua Frost, and it's for rules v. 2.1. So I'm going to ask for clarification.

Edit edit: Never mind, it's been re-upped. Apparently this is the only class that actually has roleplay requirements.

Dark Archive 4/5

It's been clarified by Mike Brock.

Back on topic! I've had a PM suggesting that I instead take an Improved Familiar from Bestiary 3. However, I don't see that it's allowed in Additional Resources, because I'm looking for it to be explicitly allowed.

Are there any non-core Improved Familiars that are allowed without needing a boon? By non-core, I mean not mentioned in the feat in the CRB.

The Ultimate Magic improved familiar table is also legal for society (see additional resources).

Fair enough, thanks for that. I'm glad to know where the information is.

Oh well, no imp consular for Manny. :(

YET.

You never know.. if I had made my wizard last year..she'd be human and have no faerie dragon instead of the demon-blooded tattooed beauty she is with the bundle of mayhem she has. :D

So keep an ear open and hope for the best.. things can and do change.

Dark Archive 4/5

It's true. I suppose I'll keep on the lookout for boons I can apply to him prior to 8th level. Maybe I'll get lucky. :)

Either way, it won't be too much of a stretch to trade Mr. Slithers the viper for Lady Feathers the imp masquerading as a raven.

I was curious too, due to my Wizard getting one automatically at 7th level due to the type she is and I was thinking of replacing it with the counselor one.

At this time the imp consular is not a legal option for an improved familiar. That said, their existence had slipped my mind, and there may one day be the opportunity to add it as a boon.
