For the thousandth time - Grappling size modifier.

Rules Questions

I cannot find anywhere a different size modifier for grappling than not. I could have sworn I read somewhere that for every size category you are larger, you get a bonus to your CMD / CMB for grappling only.

There is this chart: http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/movementPositionAndDistance.htm#bigandLitt leCreaturesInCombat

But that isn't pathfinder, but I know pathfinder is built off the d20 system. Am I correct in assuming this was removed? And does anyone know why? It makes sense to me that grappling a larger opponent would be harder.

What you want is at the bottom of page 198 of the Core rules, in the section titled Combat Maneuvers:

Quote:

The special size modifier for a creature’s Combat Maneuver Bonus is as follows: Fine –8, Diminutive –4, Tiny –2, Small –1, Medium +0, Large +1, Huge +2, Gargantuan +4, Colossal +8. Some feats and abilities grant a bonus to your CMB when performing specific maneuvers.

The size modifiers are built into the CMD and CMB totals.

CMB = Base attack bonus + Strength modifier + special size modifier

CMD = 10 + Base attack bonus + Strength modifier + Dexterity modifier + special size modifier

The special size modifier for a creature's Combat Maneuver Defense is as follows: Fine –8, Diminutive –4, Tiny –2, Small –1, Medium +0, Large +1, Huge +2, Gargantuan +4, Colossal +8.

Under the Combat Maneuvers section in Chapter 8. It's for all combat maneuvers, however, there are limitations to the size of creature you may perform various combat maneuvers against, such as grapple and overrun.

Grand Lodge

There is no size limitation for grapple.

There is for Grab (ex) though.

A helpful thing to remember is that a creatures size bonus/penalty to AC is reversed for its CMB. A big creature that is technically easier to HIT, is proportionally not easier to push, trip, grapple, etc. Same thing with smaller ones, harder to hit, easier to perform maneuvers on.

Another helpful thing to remember is that grapple is no longer a hot sweaty pile of squirming limbs. It is now more grabbing ahold of the other creature and trying to twist, snap, or crush some damage into them (or force them to move or be pinned). As such, no size limit. The man can try to bend the giant's toe backwards. He probably won't succeed, but if he does, he can do damage.

Finally, for many 3.5 players, this can be a missed thing: a successful attack of opportunity no longer stops the grapple check cold. Instead, ALL combat manuver checks suffer a penalty equal to the damage taken from successful attacks of opportunity. So the untrained grappler struck by a dagger while leaping on the evil sorceror might end up taking a -4 penalty when he gets stabbed, but it doesn't prevent him entirely.
