Currently running ROTR with 2 people in my house and 3 people joining in via skype. At first I was worried about the lack of webcams on skype, but it turned out not to be an issue.

We use Maptool to run the campaign. I've heard good things about Roll20, too. Also Paizo is making their own software for running online campaigns.

Roll20 is very simple and easy to use. However this comes at the cost of being immensely limited in comparison to the very expansive Maptool. I use maptool for their Macro features and the gigantic maps I can make, but to each their own. :)

IF you look into Maptool, I advice you to check their tutorials and forums. It takes a bit of effort to clear the initial hurdle, but once you're comfortable with the program it's the superior GM tool IMO.

Hope you have fun.

Cheers

I've got a little list of Threads with PbP tips.

thank you both so very much.

I am currently using maptools as well for a campaign. Is there any specific advise you were looking for +5Toaster?

The beautiful thing about Maptool is that it is as complex asyou want it to be, you can just use it as a platform to push virtual miniatures around and roll naked dice, while having your charsheets elsewhere and adding the modifiers in your head, as you would on a real table, or you could go as far as installing self-managing spell lists, having the entire character sheet including the current HP and status effects all being kept track of with the pawn itself and so much more.

I loved it when playing an online campaign with a few friends from the GiantITP messageboard.

Online play usually takes longer to do something then everyone setting around the table. So you, and your players, need to practice on speeding up your play.

Couple things to help with this -

Limit number of players. More players means more time between their turns.

Time limit on players. ie they need to know what they're going to do before their turn comes around.

Some type of Voice. Use voice for group activity while players can send private messages between each other for planning.

Have server (game) set up and running ahead of time. Have some practice tokens out for players to do some practice rolls / check dice before game starts.

Most frustrating issues with Online games is -
People logging in when game is starting and no character / dice rolls figured in.

Connection issues. Online games usually require access ports opened. Anti-Virus programs and some modems like to keep these closed for security reasons. Updates on any of these can change the game settings.

Check out osu-gt gametable. My friends and i use this all the time. U can make ur maps on it for all to see as well as create pogs to represent ur characters or buildings that u can add notes to like characters hp, stats, use per days, ext and save dice macros like 4d6+3+2+ what ever and name the macro w/e u want. We use Team Speak for our communications but that cost some1 money so if ur poor go with Raid Call its simple but will do what u need it to do an its free.

I am playing around with Roll20... It is fun.

I run my games with both online and in person players. We have a pretty sweet set up. We have a wall projector we use to project Google Hangout on a screen so we can see our online friends. We use a web cam so they can see us :-)

During battles I use Adobe Illustrator and an initiative tracker. I screen share with Google Hangout.

Works great for all involved.
