Spider Themed Character?

Advice

I was thinking about making a spider themed character (preferably a druid) but I can't seem to find a good way to do it. I can't find a way to wild shape into a spider, and is it just me or is the spider animal companion a little lackluster? I am not super familiar with AC rules, but its stat block seems weak.

I am open to other classes, but I do want to be able to fight as a spider. So any suggestions?

You should consider being Drow (or human with Racial Heritage) for the Spider Summoner feat.

Alternatively, you could make a synthesist (or regular summoner) for ample opportunities to be spider-like.

The summoner was definitely in my list, I just felt like it would take write a few levels to get enough points for enough legs and the Web etc. Any other ways I missed?

Ask the GM if it can have 8 legs flavorwise, while it mechanically is only a quad-ped. Without mechanically benefits, it can't really harm.

A side from that, I don't really have any ideas at the moment.

I figured it would be like that, thanks anyways. Any opinions on the spider animal companion?

Vermin Shape would let you shape into a spider but I cannot remember if there is an archetype that adds that to the wild shape options. If not try to work out an archetype with your GM. Maybe exchange the elemental forms for the vermin shapes. The spider summoner feat is a perfect choice for the concept. The drow prereq may be difficult (as far as I know you cannot fulfill it with racial heritage as per RAW)

but since the vermin shape spells are less powerful than the elemental body spells you can maybe squeeze the feat out as a bonus feat or at least let you qualify for it by choosing that archetype.

Otherwise Vermin Shape made the druid spell list...

Edit: A Vermin Shaman archetype would probably your best bet, then you could weave the expanded summons list into the Totemic Summons class feature and add the vermin shapes instead of the elemental bodies (maybe adjust the levels you get access to them down a bit though, since they are not quite as powerful)

There's also a sorcere bloodline available published by Spes Magna Games: Vermin Bloodline (see link) which might fit your character concept (except the AC/familiar).

Ruyan.

Scarab Breastplate from UE gives a Druid the ability to wildshape into a vermin as vermin shape I and at 8th level vermin shape II. It is quite expansive 32350 gp.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Well, if you play a Tiefling, the alternate physical characteristics will allow you to have insectile mandibles, an exoskeleton, vestigial limbs, a spinneret, extra non-functional eyes, and insectile limbs.

In addition to these characteristics, you can be can have the Kyton-Spawn Heritage, and cast Web as a Spell-like ability, and select a Alternate Racial Trait to have Natural Armor.

Sorcerer with the Pestilence Bloodline will give you the spells that fit your theme. Pick up the Eldritch Heritage feat, select the Arcane Bloodline, and nab a Spider familiar.

Spider animal companion does look very underwhelming. I would use that as a scout only because of its climb speed, not a very potent combat creature. You could use it for flanking and get an extra edge from the poison, but there is no greatness to be expected from the spider. I'd recommend an eidolon. That will always be just as badass as ou want it to be. Start with a quadruped and you will have all the legs you need by level 2, even without re-skinning.

Liberty's Edge

In 3.5, I once played a Fighter from an isolated tribal culture venerating spiders. He was using a spiked chain as well as Slippers of spider climb to great effect. His armor was made of giant spider's parts and bits.

A ninja or monk/ninja with a similar spider fetish could be nice.

For additional arms, I believe that some Alchemist discovery out there can give you some. Also the poison use would work well here too.

Grand Lodge

Oh yes, Alchemist have access to Vermin Shape, and can get a Spider Familiar.

That too would work well with Tiefling.

The spidery Tiefling does not work out too well because when dealing with townsfolk (in this campaign) they will treat more monstrous races as monstrous. Even the Drow is stretching it. I have been made aware that such a race is allowed, I should just have reasonable expectations of how people might react to me.

Also I can't believe I missed vermin shape. That might be just what I was looking for.

Grand Lodge

Well, Hat of Human Guise is only 800gp.

Level 1 summoner human 2 feats plus trading in your two traits to get a third will allow you to have a total of 8 actual legs via extra evolution feat.

Make a poisoner rogue with spider slippers.

Shadow Lodge

Synthesist summoner. Take some extra leg evolutions.

Don't overlook summon swarm. It can be a devastating spell in confined circumstances (like at the bottom of the pit you summoned)

Likewise, you could fight with a net and entangle people, or use lots of spider poison.

Looks like you'll need to choose between Druid, Summoner, and Alchemist.

But I'll vote for a drow cavalier on a giant spider, just for grins.
