How small can you get?

Scarab Sages

I know about reduce person, but that's only one category. You could possibly disguise self for another foot of tiny-ness (though that one specifically says "appear" to be so counting that for a size category is questionable).
Is there any spell that grants two size categories of reduction?
How small could a PC possibly get? Diminutive? Fine?

Beast Shape III or level 8 wildshape will let you become a diminutive animal. Since polymorphs don't stack you cannot be further reduced.

Vermin shape, surprisingly, only goes down to tiny.

Fine sized Halfling fighter with magical flight, Dervish Dance, Pirahna Strike, and Risky Striker. Are you picturing it?

Scarab Sages

@chaoseffect Oh, that's good. I like it.

Hmm. I was kinda hoping for some spell option I'd overlooked on the divine lists. Maybe wish or miracle could probably do it, albeit with a heavy price tag and some chance for unintended side effects.

You can't use Piranha Strike with Dervish Dance (scimitar is not a light weapon.)

Scarab Sages

Oh well, still a good visual. :)

Could replace Dervish Dance with an Agile weapon then I guess.

A rod of wonder has a 4% chance of reducing you two size categories for one day, and this is an "untyped" effect so it could stack with reduce person.

So, it takes some doing, but there's your fine halfling.

Polymorph Any Object should let you become fine, too.

And it's probably easier and safer to use than the rod of wonder.

Rod of Wonder is safe. All you risk is changing color, or blinding yourself for a little while. AND it should be available some time before lvl 15.

Hahah, this is it! I just finished a campaign with a diminutive-sized gnome who rode a faerie dragon (a spellscar oracle who had some additional way to reroll the Rod of Wonder d% when he didn't like either of his first two rolls.)

I never found out for sure how he made himself diminutive, but I fully believe the character was insane enough to start every morning by zapping himself dozens of times with a Rod of Wonder. It wasn't until almost the final session when we first encountered an antimagic field and saw him as small for the first time.

You're right, Disguise Person doesn't change Size Category.

Umm...
Reduce Person wrote:
Multiple magical effects that reduce size do not stack.

That doesn't care about typing.

You can cast Reduce Person on a Diminutive Familiar (Thrush), making it Fine, and then if you are a Beast-Bonded Witch, switch souls/bodies with it. Alternatively, Magic Jar.

The young template decreases your size by one category. So if you Polymorph Any Object a small, young race, that would get you to 3 size categories down, right?
(By DM permission, of course)

Liberty's Edge

Are we looking for Martin Short and Dennis Quaid small?

Points if you get the reference.

Unless otherwise noted, polymorph spells cannot be used to change into specific individuals. Although many of the fine details can be controlled, your appearance is always that of a generic member of that creature's type. Polymorph spells cannot be used to assume the form of a creature with a template or an advanced version of a creature.

Scarab Sages

-1 points for me. :(

As far as size, I want to be able to dodge a mithral fly swatter by standing in one of the holes.

like ciretose suggested, the idea of shrinking to microscopic size (or ant size) always seemed so fun and appealing, it's a shame it's not really part of the core D&D experience... but neither is growing to REALLY giant size, either. i guess it's more amenable to cinematic experience than a game where you're expecting everybody to be 'balanced'.

Scarab Sages

You can't assume the form of a creature with a template, but what if you were granted the template (by GM) before the polymorph?

I realize that this is nowhere near RAW. Probably not even close to RAI, but could that technically work, you think?

Now I want to make a huge barbarian with leadership and put a tiny cleric in his pocket to cure and buff him all day :)

And a dual-cursed oracle riding each shoulder?

OMG YES

"Is that a Divine Assessor in your pocket or you just happy to see me?" ;)

Scarab Sages

Aww, my thread's gotten side tracked...

Oh well, probably for the best. I'm pretty deep into DM Fiat territory here so I'll just present the option of mega-smallness to him and see what happens.

Well, you could always go demilich... Diminutive, IIRC.

Tiny , unfortunately. Could still get to diminutive, though, so it shows promise. If only it wasn't CR 14.

Ah crap. Ah well, it is still a good way to get ahead in the world.
