The table says each attack should be primary which would be str and a half. The bite should be +8 (1d6+7) and claws should be +3 (1d6+8 as well?)

Maybe i dont know when to apply STR and a half to natural attacks.

Sovereign Court

You get 1.5xStr when the creature only has one natural attack, or when it only uses a single natural attack. In addition, that natural attack must be of the type that only comes in singles, not pairs. What I mean is a bite or a gore qualifies, but claws or slams do not as they are always paired.

So your bear would get 1.5xStr when only biting. If it uses all of its attacks, it only gets Str to each.

Not all slams come in pairs. Possibly the case for claws too, but I don't know any examples off the top of my head.

There's also this bit, about how the rules about primary and 1-1/2 are actually about one type of natural attack.

Sovereign Court

You're right, a tail slam wouldn't be paired. I was only thinking of slams related to creatures with arms (golems, undead, etc.)

I still think I got it right though with regards to his bear.

That isn't a tail slam attack...

Sovereign Court

Well it's got secondary natural attack penalties and it's assumed he's using two weapon fighting with his quarterstaff. What do you think is causing the slam? Kick? Headbutt? I think getting wacked with a bushy tail seems the coolest.

It doesn't really matter though. I agree that slams don't need to be paired.

Scarab Sages

I remember having a lot of discussions about this back in the day when I was writing up statblocks for summons and other creations. As far as I gathered, the *only* time a creature gains 1.5 STR is if he has a single natural attack. If he has more but only uses one, he doesn't get the bonus, it stays at what is listed.

There was one exception I remember getting (whether it was from Sean, Jason, I don't recall), but that was in regards to Multi-Attack from a Druid Animal Companion. They get the feat at a certain point, and if the creature only has one attack, it gives them an extra one at -5. Normally this would stop them from qualifying for the 1.5 STR bit, but the recommendation was to allow it to persist so the 'bonus' doesn't become detrimental.
