Quick update: New to PFS. I have played 2 sanctioned games, but would like also start running at home. I have read over the PFS guide. I have not purchased the Field Guide yet. I am looking to run Thornkeep mods as the first PFS for my players.
Question 1) Fame - In the two scenerios I have played 29 and 45, there is no spot for fame. On the Thornkeep chronicle sheet there is a slot of Fame. Where is this normally recorded? My understanding is it is different from Prestige. In my last session I had to pay a PP to get blindness removed. Did my fame go down as well? Thought they were seperate stats.
Question 2) Gold Accural - How is the gold award amount decided? In my two PFS games as a level 1 character I have gotten just over 500gp per scenerio. Where does this number come from? In the Guide, I think, it says it is in the scenerio. With Thornkeep not originally being a PFS module, there is nothing in the book that states the gold amount acquired. Where would I find such writings?
Question 3) What does this: To create an dhampir, fetchling, goblin, ifrit, kitsune, nagaji, oread, sylph, undine, or wayang character, you must have a Chronicle sheet that opens the race as a legal option at character creation. mean? How do you know when the legal options on chronicle sheets occur? *scratches head*
That is it for now. Sorry about all of the silly questions, I just want a good handle on this before I run something wrong. Thanks.

Hey SFG, and welcome.
1. Chronicle sheet formats changed from season 0-1 to more recent ones, adding the Fame box separate from prestige. What I do when I get an old chronicle is to just split the box in two by drawing a line in pen. You need to track both Prestige and Fame as with the new chronicles.
Prestige is a "currency" while Fame only goes up. Fame is basically your total lifetime Prestige, while Prestige can go up or down as you earn and spend it.
2. The chronicle sheets say on the top right "Max gold" for each tier and subtier. This is the gold the players get UNLESS some shenanigans happened in the scenario such as players skipping encounters (and thus treasure) or were defeated early in the scenario. In that case, you reduce the amount of gold in "max gold" to compensate.
3. In order to play those races you need a special chronicle sheet that says you can. They are commonly known by PFS players are "race boons". You can earn these by attending special events, large conventions, special PFS happenings, etc... Otherwise, only the races in the Core Rulebook are legal, plus Tiefling, Aasimar and Tengu from the additional resources.
Hope that helped!

1) Fame is equal to the total number of prestige that you have earned across all scenarios. It does not go down. So, for example, if you play in 3 scenarios and earn 5 PP, then spend 2 on a Wand of CLW, you have 5 Fame and 3 PP.
2) The gold amount is based on each encounter. Every part of the scenario has an amount of gold paid out if you complete that portion of the adventure. In practice, the average adventuring party will get almost all, if not all of the gold in each scenario.
3) The chronicle sheets (called "boons") which open up these races are generally given out at special game days or conventions. The sheet will explicitly state that it opens these races up for play.

As always you guys are amazing. Glancing over the sheet I had always for some silly reason read max gold and max xp. Thought it was in case you were using the scenerio as a non-PFS game. DOH!
I knew Prestige was a currency which is why I was confused on the old sheets were it did not have a spot for fame. Got it now.
Chronicle sheets make sense now, I look forward to PAX so I can unlock a new race to play.
Thanks again for the awesome help. I will probably have more silly questions in the coming weeks, thanks for the patience.

Great! Glad that we could be of help. I should let you know ahead of time, though, that the racial boons are fairly rare. You shouldn't expect one going into a con - even if you do win a boon, it might not be a race one.

So how do I get set up as an offical GM for PFS?
If you have a PFS id #, then that's all there is to it.
Run a game, collect the PFS #s of your players, and click "Create an Event" in the PFS section of Paizo.com to report your game. Or you can create the event in advance, and report the players and result afterward. Or if you're GMing at a convention or public game day, the organizer might just take your PFS # and report everything on the web site, so you don't have to.

More questions time:
Item acquistion:
In the rules that I have read it says that any items found in the adventure will be made available at the end of the adventure for purchase from the society.
In reading Thornkeep: The Accursed Halls - in the broken hallway you find a +1 chainmail shirt. That is not reflected on the chronicle sheet. Can this be purchased or not? Is it a misprint? Will it cause issues if my players go to another society game?
|
The only items usually listed on Chronicles are items that are not on the Always Available list.
+1 chainmail shirt is somethign that is already Always Available, which is why it isn't listed.
Most mundane equipment (other than firearms), and +1 armor, weapons and shields will usually not be listed on the Chronicles, as those are listed in the GtPFSOP as Always Available.

More Event set up questions:
I was setting up an event for my group as we are about to run Thornkeep. Thornkeep is really more like 5 modules not just one. I am trying to figure out how to set that up in the system. Under events there is only one spot for Thornkeep. How do you deal with that with multiple levels like Thornkeep has? Thanks bunches.

You use the same generic "thornkeep" regardless of which one you run.
Cheers!

So why are some scenerios retired?
-SFG
The retired ones are from Season 0 was was written under 3.5 rules. My understanding ( and probably someone with better search fu than I today) is that the overall theme of the scenario, as well as, the function w/in the pathfinder rules did not work well with the socity set ...
You can still run them for your group, you just wouldn't get a chronicle for it

Ok .. did some searching on my lunch break ... the best post I could find on the retired scenarios is this one.

So I was thinking about the fame thing. If I am running level 1's through the 1st level of Thornkeep they are going to get 4 fame. According to the chart in the guide players do not start getting a gold level until 5 fame. This means they cannot purchase anything or that they are limited to purchasing anything to 0-500gp level?
Hence after they finish The Accursed Halls they would not be allowed to purchase that +1 chainmail because they do not have enough fame?

As kinevon stated above, items from the "always available list" are... always available, regardless of fame score.
So for example:
+1 chainmail is ALWAYS available for 1,300 gp, REGARDLESS of fame.
pearl of power (1st) is only 1,000 gp, but can only be purchased once:
A) your fame score reaches a level that allows to to buy 1,000gp or more
B) it shows up in a chronicle sheet.
For items not in the always available list, EITHER A or B need to be true.

We really need a PFS item purchasing tutorial. Unfortunately, the Guide to Organized Play isn't written very well with regard to this, because the information is spread out in different sections, which makes it tough for newbies to put it all together.
Here's the key points:
A character can purchase any of the following:
1. Anything from the "Always Available" list on pages 24-25 of the Guide to Organized Play. This includes any non-magical item that is legal for play, except dragonhide and firearms. It also includes +1 weapons, +1 armor, and +1 shields, along with scrolls, potions, and oils of level 1 (or lower) spells. And it includes default Wayfinders.
2. Anything that has ever appeared on one of their chronicle sheets for that PC. The exception are things that are listed as having a limited quantity, which can only be purchased the number of times listed. But things without a limited quantity on the chronicle can be purchased as many times as you want. If a player has multiple characters, be sure to keep your chronicles separated by PC.
3. Other stuff, based on Fame score. This is where the chart on page 26 of the Guide comes into play. If your Fame is less than 5, then this third category is "nothing". Once you hit 5 Fame, you can start purchasing things worth 500 gp or less that aren't "Always Available" or on your chronicle sheets.
It's also worth noting that you can only purchase things that are allowed by the Additional Resources list, regardless of which of the three methods above you use to qualify to buy them. *deliberately ignores level 0 scenarios that list non-Pathfinder items on chronicles*
Hope this helps!

Derail: I hope you got 6 players, or you are going to have some dead PCs in your hands. Thornkeep is not the best thing to run for brand new players. I'd do the free First Steps Series, if you haven't already.

@CRobledo Oh we have been playing for about 10 years. So we are not newbies to Pathfinder just to the society. Just looking over the dungeon The Accursed Halls does not look that bad.
@Fromper Yeah a buying guide for society newbs would be good. I have copy and pasted your comments into a document sent out to my players.
I thought the 'Always available meant that it was always there if you had the fame to purchase it. Thanks for the clarification.

I ran this with four level 2 and one level 1 players and it was not cakewalk. The oracle is ok but the two killer ones are the wight and the shadow. The shadow is incorporeal, and most NEW level 1 characters wont have oils of magic/bless weapon. It's very possible you will have a party with no way to damage it. The wight can drop a level 1 character with full attacks very easily.
Again, not saying impossible, but very tough.
Also, you might want to spoiler tag the details about the monsters in Thornkeep, as this is the player's and not the GM boards.

@Netopalis you are simply amazing sir (guessing sir due to profile picture but just in case) or madam.
@CR hmm not sure how to do the spoiler thing, I will be more mindful of what I post here in the future thanks for the heads up.
Figured the spoiler thing out!!

Sir is indeed correct, and I was glad that I could be of help!
If you folks need good scenarios, message me and I can recommend a few. I've only recently started, but I've read over several of the "Best for newbie" threads and can probably help you get on the right track. I have neither played nor ran Thornkeep, but it sounds like a really, really tough intro to PFS. It also doesn't paint the whole picture, due to the lack of faction missions.

So back to race questions:
On the resource page it says:
Gnomes: all alternate racial traits, racial subtypes, and favored class options are legal for play;...
But it also says:
In Chapter 3, nothing from the changelings, duergar, gillmen, gripplis, merfolk, samsarans, strix, sulis, svirfneblin, vanaras, and vishkanyas entries are currently legal for play.
Aren't svirfnelin just deep gnomes? a racial subtype of gnome? I am trying to go for the distintion here as I have a player that wants to play one.

Svirfneblin are a separate race, who just happen to be related to dwarves. "Racial subtypes" are pre-packaged groups of alternate racial traits, which give that race a slightly different twist. Those should be listed just after the alternate racial traits for each race.

One of my players has my ARG so I cannto look it up at the moment. grrr argh.
-SFG
You can look at the contents of the core hardback rulebooks for free here: http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/
But as noted above, Deep Gnomes are treated as a separate race from gnomes.
