Feats

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

So my players and I were leveling up their characters and we trying to go though feats. The problem is there are a lot of them - is there anyway to filter through the feats so we can just see the ones that are related to class and level?

Thanks, guys,

storyist

I do not know of any way to filter by level prerequisites other than using PCGen. Which is really handy. But other than that I use the Feat Tree layout if looking on the SRD. That lets you see the parent feat, then if you like that you can look at the ones that build off of it. Here is the link: Feat Tree

The above links to d20pfsrd.com feat database available in a variety of formats. You should be able to sort and filter than reasonably well.

If it says +2 to X skill and X skill, skip it. (persuasive)

If it sounds like a feat you would never, ever use, skip it. (endurance)

If it seems like a feat that is way too weak, skip it. (fleet/dash)

Then look through the rest of the feats.

Except Endurance is awesome, otherwise every time you get attacked at night no armor and it takes forever for everyone to get there stats figured out without armor, you don't use endurance.

Depends on your equipment really. There seems to be a tendency that anyone not wearing heavy armor ends up in something that counts as light (includes mithral breastplates).

I don't mind having Endurance as it (and Diehard) are the prereqs for Tenacious Survivor which is a GREAT feat.

Beric Dondarrion has this Feat tree I think......

I suppose that is another way to gauge the value of a feat-does it lead to bigger and better things?

Of course, the presence of prerequisites can devalue a feat too. Outside of fighters, most classes can only grab one, maybe two feat trees.

Filtering feats to apply to class and level is really tough given available resources.

Maezer linked to the d20pfsrd 'feat database' and I'll second his recommendation. It's a good place to start. You can quickly browse and filter a ton of feats there.

The PRD can be used to learn how feats work together fairly quickly.
Read the feats summary in each book individually, then try to see combinations that go together or fit your character concept.

Reading the Advice forum and available class guides will give you some good ideas too. It can help you get an idea of which feats are most useful for each class.

It might also help to post a 'critique my build' type thread in the Advice forum. You will get some good suggestions that way.

Just pick a book or 3. Core, advanced player guide, and one that fits the theme (inner sea world guide/ advanced race guide). Don't give your npc's anything your players can't have and your good. Understanding the basics is more important than having all possible options.

If at the end of your campaign everyone is comfortable with his spells/ skills you can add more books.

Endurance is horrible in that you may never be attacked at night or have to make related checks, and it could be rolled into another feat easily, and that its part of feat taxes, things you may never use or want and are unrelated to a feat but you have to take because reasons. Just because it can be useful in a situation doesn't make it good.

Anyways... I usually look things up with a search function and/or use the find function for key words on databases(such as D20PFSRD) or through PDFs. There are a ridiculous number of feats, and some aren't really that related to the books their in. When you first start it can take a while to figure out which ones rock and which ones aren't so hot.

I prefer this personally, it allows you to easily see a lot of the common feats and their relation to each other.
