Lady Vulpina |
Oooo, looks fun! My newer character, Yulai Reipia, needs fleshing out (Kitsune Picaroon/Mysterious Stranger).
1. Why are you a Pathfinder?
I suppose the shortest answer to that question is, "Because I can." The longer answer is that it's good for the pockets and it's an excellent way to show the family back home that no idiot with a rapier will stand for long against someone with a metal tube, some black powder, and a bit of iron.
2. Do you have a name and surname that is not ripped straight out of existing Earth mythology or popular culture?
Yes.
3. Which nation did you grow up in? How did this nation influence you?
I grew up as the daughter of one of the lesser noble houses of Tian Xia, in the Successor States. My family has seen men form armies, clash, create kingdoms, and die off. I have learned the simplest truth of power: it is fleeting, and opportunity will pass you by if you do not snatch it by the grip and pull the trigger.
4. What do you look like? What are your wearing? How does this vary when you’re stalking through forests, sewers, deserts or in glittering cities?
I spend most of my time as a human woman with a copper tone to my skin, long black hair, and silk over my body. I've found, since moving to Avistan, that I'm on the short side. When I gear up for adventures, however, I tend toward a set of leather armor, strapped in such a way that I can set my rapier and pistol on the same hip. Sometimes I will wear the silk overtop.
If needed, I will show my true Kitsune form, but I have little intention of using it. The humans are most comfortable among their own.
I do not do sewers. Excuse you.
5. What do you love? (Treasure and experience doesn’t count)
Being better than everyone else. Thankfully, that's always the case, so I'm in a pretty good mood most of the time.
6. What do you hate? (Unclear and irritating darkness level rules don’t count)
When the Society groups me in with five or more others. I have to work that much harder to stand out!
7. Which other Pathfinders (PCs) do you rely on for teamwork, survival and butt-kicking? Do you have a bro? a mentor? a father figure? maybe a rival?
Thus far I've mostly worked with Taron the Shrike, a tengu whose primary combat tactic seems to be leaping on top of her enemies and tearing them to pieces. It's... inelegant. She has a fondness for stories, so thankfully she'll be able to tell the world of the time I single-handedly slaughtered a minotaur while the rest of my team assisted a helpless halfling in escaping. The half-orc cried.
8. How does your race influence your views? Are you a stereotype of a certain race? How are you different from most humans/elves/gnomes/orcs/tengu?
My family puts appearance over all else; few know that we are even kitsunes. I tend to see humans as not real people, I suppose-- for me, humanity is a fun mask to play with, and I can't imagine that being someone's full-time existence.
9. What are you afraid of? Do you have any phobias or worries?
Imagine if I was ever wrong about something? Thankfully, that's a ludicrous scenario best fit for satire. And for what it's worth, rapiers work perfectly fine against zombies, if you know what you're doing with them, thank you very much.
10. What is your most treasured possession?
Pepperbox pistol. Obviously.
Blue Orc |
1. Why are you a Pathfinder? So this is your physiological exam? I have completed my Conformation, why is this necessary? If this is about the Belkzen incident I was conforming to the local customs...
2. Do you have a name and surname that is not ripped straight out of existing Earth mythology or popular culture? Blue was my slave name, it is my name now. I took it and I am going to keep it.
3. Which nation did you grow up in? How did this nation influence you? I was born in the Realm of the Mammoth Lords, I was given the sacred tattoos and was ready to challenge the chief for leadership. Then the witches captured me.
4. What do you look like? What are your wearing? How does this vary when you’re stalking through forests, sewers, deserts or in glittering cities? Blue's sacred tattoos are displayed proudly, thick blue bands that cover the the right half of his body. Even his chain shirt is glamoured to appear only as a war sash and not obscure his tattoos.
5. What do you love? (Treasure and experience doesn’t count) The rush of battle! To feel the mighty swings of a construct as its limbs swing by a hairsbreadth away, the hint of ozone as your blade cleaves its chest.
6. What do you hate? (Unclear and irritating darkness level rules don’t count) The witches of Irrisen, and an who would try to enslave the will of a free-person...
7. Which other Pathfinders (PCs) do you rely on for teamwork, survival and butt-kicking? Do you have a bro? a mentor? a father figure? maybe a rival? Chuffy would have been a good pathfinder. He is not one, he died in Irrisen but he gave me this with his dying breath. Blue presents a toad. We escaped the witches together.
8. How does your race influence your views? Are you a stereotype of a certain race? How are you different from most humans/elves/gnomes/orcs/tengu? Half-orcs are a wildly varied crowd, so Blue is a more a result of his upbringing and trails than of his race.
9. What are you afraid of? Do you have any phobias or worries? In the mining camp their was an Ulfen man, a former warlord. He had a strong will and resisted the witches, so they cut the tendons in his legs. He could mine with only his arms. When I fled the slave camp, he could not flee with me. I will never let myself be maimed.
10. What is your most treasured possession? Blue hefts a heavy wicked looking kukri or black metal. When I was in the fields harvesting for the witches a hunk of ore fell from the sky. I found it, I hid it, and ever so slowly I collected the wisdom to work it. In the night I hid it in the burning forges, in the morning I sneaked it away to temper it in the snow, in the afternoon I worked the anvil shaping weapons for my enemies so that I could also shape my freedom. And once my work was complete, I cut my bonds with my forged weapon and made my break for freedom.
Sleeping Sword |
1. Why are you a Pathfinder? "Huh? Wuzzat? Uh, to travel. You cannot truly master yourself by hiding behind monastery walls. I hope, by the grace of the Empress of Heaven, to do some good in the world whilst I learn self-mastery through trial and experience."
2. Do you have a name and surname that is not ripped straight out of existing Earth mythology or popular culture? Sleeping Sword is named for and partly inspired by a character in an old kung-fu movie, but I cannot for the life of my find the name of the film. The character was an old guy snoozing on a sheathed katana. When bandits attacked, he "woke up", exclaimed 'Sleeping Sword, that's my style!', and beat the crud out of the attackers.
3. Which nation did you grow up in? How did this nation influence you? "Uh. My birth was cursed. I wandered, alone, until I learned of a secret place of learning, where those cursed as I am could come to understand both the curse and the gifts it brings with it. I journeyed across the Crown of the World until I found the place. For years, I studied with my brothers and sisters, under the guidance of the Empress of Heaven. Now, I seek to repay the Empress for her favour."
4. What do you look like? What are your wearing? How does this vary when you’re stalking through forests, sewers, deserts or in glittering cities? "I am old and decrepit. But I possess power beyond the ken of mortal men. I am both more and less than human. I bear two swords: the sacred Katana of the Empress of Heaven, and a simple temple sword such as those I trained with. I wear travelling clothes or heavy winter cloaks. Should I travel to warmer climes, simple robes are enough."
5. What do you love? (Treasure and experience doesn’t count) "Huh? Love, that is a strong emotion. The Way of the Sleeping Sword teaches us that understanding comes through peace, peace comes through harmony. Strong emotions cloud one's judgement."
6. What do you hate? (Unclear and irritating darkness level rules don’t count) "zzzzzz...zzzzzz...uh? Strong emotions cloud one's judgement!"
7. Which other Pathfinders (PCs) do you rely on for teamwork, survival and butt-kicking? Do you have a bro? a mentor? a father figure? maybe a rival? "I have worked with a number of fellow pathfinders. As for a mentor, I belong to the Way of the Sleeping Sword."
8. How does your race influence your views? Are you a stereotype of a certain race? How are you different from most humans/elves/gnomes/orcs/tengu? "My birth was cursed. I am what is called a 'Dhampir,' a half-vampire. Many who learn of the existence of Dhampirs assume we are all much the same as our undead progenitors. Some of us are, and we all feel the hunger. But the hunger can be mastered, and it can be a source of strength. That is what the Way of the Sleeping Sword teaches us, by the grace of the Empress of Heaven."
9. What are you afraid of? Do you have any phobias or worries? "zzz...zzz...zzz...uh? Fear is a strong emotion. But only paladins and madmen lack fear. I fear losing myself, losing control. I fear the hunger, even though it gives me strength."
10. What is your most treasured possession? "Material possessions are not treasures. Life is a treasure, a treasure beyond value."
Sleeping Sword |
Might it be Last Hurrah For Chivalry?
It's very possible I was thinking of the character "Sleeping Wizard" in that film! I'm going to have to get hold of it and check it out. Thanks for the tip; looks like a fun film even if it's not the same one.
Alyssa Goldnight |
1. Why are you a Pathfinder? "Oh, well, um... I guess I joined because I was told I could help make a difference. Make a name for myself in the process, that'd be nice, too. And make friends to help me out when I need it... oh, and friends to help out, obviously!"
2. Do you have a name and surname that is not ripped straight out of existing Earth mythology or popular culture? While the name Alyssa is indeed from Earth, her full name isn't.
3. Which nation did you grow up in? How did this nation influence you? "Oh.... yeah. I grew up in Cheliax. And it was... not good. But it did show me how much bad there is in need to becoming good! ...if that made any sense. Anyways, I guess seeing all those people hurting and crying out for help made me realize that they're not going to get saved unless someone does the saving. And since I can swing a sword and Sarenrae likes me... why not be the one doing the saving, right?"
4. What do you look like? What are your wearing? How does this vary when you’re stalking through forests, sewers, deserts or in glittering cities? "A lot of people call me pretty, but I don't really see what they mean. I'm just a normal girl from a village in the middle of Cheliax. I'm not sure who the 'Azlanti' are... or were?... but people compare me to them a lot. I wear what armor I could afford, and I'm not really all that tall... but I worked on the fields so much back home that I'm no pushover with this sword of mine! I don't really stalk anywhere, I want people to know I'm there. It'd be a shame to get shot by a hunter or something. And... why would I go in the sewers, exactly? Do pathfinders do that often?"
5. What do you love? (Treasure and experience doesn’t count) "My mother. No, wait - the whole village I grew up in! My mother more than the rest, though, I guess. I love helping people and thinking that, if she saw me doing it, she'd be proud. I really want to go see her again, but I... don't want to risk it until I can get her somewhere safer."
6. What do you hate? (Unclear and irritating darkness level rules don’t count) "Pain. N-Not feeling it, though; I'm more than used to that. I can shoulder as much as Sarenrae is willing to give me. No, I hate pain being inflicted on others. And I may never stop that entirely, but I'll try. At the very least, I plan on alleviating as much pain as I possibly can where I can."
7. Which other Pathfinders (PCs) do you rely on for teamwork, survival and butt-kicking? Do you have a bro? a mentor? a father figure? maybe a rival? "Father figure...? Do people see their fathers as good? I have a lot to learn... oh, right, the question. Um, I'm just signing on, so I actually haven't met any other pathfinders yet. But hopefully I will soon!"
8. How does your race influence your views? Are you a stereotype of a certain race? How are you different from most humans/elves/gnomes/orcs/tengu? "Well I was taller than the halflings on the farm... but they were really nice to me anyways! I mostly see other humans, but Sarenrae teaches that it's what people do that we should pay attention to, not what they look like. I think that most everyone is different than what people expect of them, if they're expecting everyone of each race to be the exact same. As long as they're nice, I like them! Easy question!"
9. What are you afraid of? Do you have any phobias or worries? "I don't really get scared much... I think Sarenrae helps me with that. But I'm afraid of letting people down, I think. I just hope that I can get strong enough that I can stop worrying about that some day."
10. What is your most treasured possession? "Well, I don't have much... do memories count? I really like thinking back to when I was still at my home village, and not... yeah. Home, I think."
