Languages?

Beginner Box

I can't find a place that explains languages more in depth. I mainly need to know if someone that has Draconic as a language can try to talk to the dragon (black fang) in this adventure. And how do I handle that? My son's elf took it as a language and knowing him, he will try something. What sort of skill check would I make? I'm assuming it doesn't matter too much as the dragon is chaotic evil, it would most likely say something mean and spit some acid in my sons face, yes?
Any advice?

If two creatures both know the same language (Draconic for example) they can simply talk in that language, without making skill checks.

That being said, most Dragons are actually fairly intelligent and will understand Common too. (I don't know the stats of Black Fang, so I can't say for sure, but check his entry if it has a Language line somewhere)

Well if your son took Draconic as a language he can talk to the dragon. He doesn't need any skill check to communicate with him but you can ask for a Diplomacy check if he tries to negotiate with the dragon (although it will be very unlikely to have any effect on the Dragon).

If you plan to run more adventures featuring Black Fang then this first interaction could be more interesting if there is some sort of dialog before the fight begins. Maybe the Dragon taunts the characters or tries to bargain with them - asking for their treasures in exchange for their lives, maybe?

That way, on the next adventure the players will be fighting Black Fang instead of a "nameless" black dragon.

The Beginner Box doesn't use different languages. It assumes that intelligent creatures can talk to each other, at least in a simplistic (like with the goblins) way.

@Quatar I don't see a language box (at least not in the p 63 entry of GM guide)but him speaking common would make sense if intelligent. It only shows me his INT as +0 tho? Bleh, Im still confused about a few things as a nooblet =P

@BTam I like your idea about including him in other adventures, but are you allowed to do that with society games or do you have to stick to the printed material, just wondering. I haven't read all the society rules yet, waiting till payday to order the field guide etc.

@ Sean, yeah I know the BB doesn't use languages but I have been using the core book to make the transition easier later. I also let them pick races from the core book as I think it would be a pain to switch later. Get all the page flipping done at once =D

Thanks all!

Hmm if his Int modifier is +0 then he has a 10 or 11 Int and doesn't get bonus languages.
He still speaks Draconic though, so your son would be able to talk to him.

Of course he could have put Skillpoints into Linguistics (something that probably doesn't exist in the BB either) to learn new languages. (What I'm saying is: If you want the Dragon to talk to everyone have him know Common. If you want him to talk only to your son, then he only speaks Draconic.)

I think for Society (PFS) you have to stick to printed material, but no one forces you to play PFS. You can just run PF normally in your homegames and pretty much do whatever you want. PF and PFS are different things

The advantage of PFS (as I see it, not playing it myself) is that you have a character that you can play in different games with different GMs and different players, while still having a common framework.
If you have a steady group, then I honestly don't see any advantage in limiting yourself by all those additional PFS rules and restrictions.

Thanks for the extra info on PFS, I was thinking it was a more "linear" way to play if that makes sense. There are no groups on my island at all that I can find. I would like to make a pfs char to play online tho so I can "vacation" from the job of DM now and then and just play.

I think I'll slip my son a note just to give the kids a broader understanding of how many different things can happen in game.

I also found more info on dragons here

I'm used to D&D. I keep forgetting that in Pathfinder you can still look things up regardless of not blowing your entire paycheck on Bestiaries etc. I get happier about choosing the Pathfinder Box over new D&D box every minute!

Another cool resource is http://www.d20pfsrd.com/
Unlike your link (which is from Paizo directly) that one is fan-made, but I find it's sorted in a better way that makes finding stuff easier.

As I said, I'm no expert on PFS, I'm not playing it or have played it, or really looked into it yet. If you want to know more there's a whole section on PFS here on the forum, I'm sure they'll gladly tell you more.
