Question on Resist Energy Spell

Rules Questions

Hi do you have to pick what type of energy you resist when you learn this spell or when you cast it.

You choose which type of energy when you cast it, not when you learn the spell or prepare it (if you prepare spells) for the day.

Same with Summon Monster and many other spells that give you different options.

Thanks for answering would have thought more than 1 person would post answer.

No need if the first persons answer is spot on.

well would like as much ammunition as possible as my group can be argumentative when they want to be.

Liberty's Edge

You don't need too much ammunition when the single shot is large enough, and I think the Core Rulebook is large enough :)

Resist Energy
School abjuration; Level cleric 2, druid 2, paladin 2, ranger 1, sorcerer/wizard 2
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S, DF
Range touch
Target creature touched
Duration 10 min./level
Saving Throw Fortitude negates (harmless); Spell Resistance yes (harmless)

This abjuration grants a creature limited protection from damage of whichever one of five energy types you select: acid, cold, electricity, fire, or sonic. The subject gains resist energy 10 against the energy type chosen, meaning that each time the creature is subjected to such damage (whether from a natural or magical source), that damage is reduced by 10 points before being applied to the creature's hit points. The value of the energy resistance granted increases to 20 points at 7th level and to a maximum of 30 points at 11th level. The spell protects the recipient's equipment as well.

Resist energy absorbs only damage. The subject could still suffer unfortunate side effects.

Resist energy overlaps (and does not stack with) protection from energy. If a character is warded by protection from energy and resist energy, the protection spell absorbs damage until its power is exhausted.

You (the caster) select the kind of energy against which the target get extra resistance.

Compare with Protection from Evil Good, ecc., those spells refer all to Protection from Evil, but are listed separately.
There is no space for doubt.

For a potion of Resist Energy it is no longer variable though since the spell is already cast and the element decided.
