If that was the case pushing people into holes would be very bad.
I always thought Bull Rush was more of a push and then a slamming toss. Like you occupy the square of the thing you were pushing and then it flies backwards.

You don't have to move with them.
You can move with the target if you wish but you must have the available movement to do so. If your attack fails, your movement ends in front of the target.
