What do you need toroll on your knowledge check to get the cclass feature bonus?
Know Thy Enemy (Ex): "At 7th level, a lore warden can take a standard action to study a specific target in sight. He must make a Knowledge check to determine the target’s abilities and weaknesses as part of this standard action. If successful, the lore warden not only notes the appropriate abilities and weaknesses, as detailed under the Knowledge skill, but also gains a +2 competence bonus on all attack rolls and weapon damage rolls made against that enemy. Note that this bonus on attack and damage rolls applies only to that specific creature. This bonus lasts for the duration of an encounter, or until the lore warden attempts a new Knowledge check to use this ability on a different target."
Knowledge: "You can use this skill to identify monsters and their special powers or vulnerabilities. In general, the DC of such a check equals 10 + the monster's CR. For common monsters, such as goblins, the DC of this check equals 5 + the monster's CR. For particularly rare monsters, such as the tarrasque, the DC of this check equals 15 + the monster's CR, or more."

So what your saying is that you need to roll the minimum DC for a knowledge roll against the target?

So what your saying is that you need to roll the minimum DC for a knowledge roll against the target?
Difficulty Class (DC): "Whenever a creature attempts to perform an action whose success is not guaranteed, he must make some sort of check (usually a skill check). The result of that check must meet or exceed the Difficulty Class of the action that the creature is attempting to perform in order for the action to be successful."
If you meet or exceed the DC with your knowledge check, then the check was successful and you remember a bit of useful information about that monster, as well as gain a +2 competence bonus on all attack rolls and weapon damage rolls made against that enemy.

If all you're looking to get is the +2 and one answer about the target, yes. Rolling higher still has the standard benefit of giving you more answers about what you encounter.

No you do not get benefits from other creatures of the same time with the Lore Warden Know Your Enemy ability - like other similar features (there is a Bard archetype that has something similar) the feature only works on a SPECIFIC creature.
i.e. think of it as the Lore Warden is studying a specific individual for their weaknesses - learning how to get past them more effectively. But each individual is unique so the Lore Warden has to study a new creature.
It is a nice ability since it adds a competence bonus though also worth paying attention to other possible sources of Competence bonuses since those bonuses do not stack:
- Bardic Inspire Courage also grants a Competence bonus to hits and damage so the Lore Warden Know your Enemy feature does not stack with Inspire Courage
- Bracers of Archery grant a competence bonus
and there are a few other common sources so well worth watching.
This plus the fact that the Lore Warden ability requires you to spend a Standard Action means that it is going to often not be worth doing - though if you can't close with a BBEG it might be well worth spending a turn studying the BBEG to get both these bonuses and the regular knowledge about that BBEG you get on a successful Knowledge check (but also note that for this ability you always use the 15+CR for the check even if the creature is a common race such as a human)

Actually, assuming the bard archetype you're referring to is Archivist, it doesn't have that drawback. Archivist applies to all creatures of the same type - use it on one frost giant and the bonus applies to all frost giants. Its only restriction is that the creatures need to actually be the same type, i.e. you can't use it on a frost giant and then get bonuses against fire giants.
If you want to be a fighter and use Int in combat, you pretty much need to wait until Lore Warden 15* (when Know Thy Enemy becomes swift so you're not wasting a turn on its paltry effect) or Tactician 15 (Battle Insight). What little exists before then is pretty much too weak to be worth using.
*This is listed as 14th level on d20pfsrd, which I assume is a typo because it replaces Armor Training 4.

"It's weird. I knew exactly where to stab that first guy, but as soon as he fell, I forgot. Now I can't figure out where to put the knife in this other guy who looks exactly like him!"
(I know, I know, game balance etc. It's just funny.)
The point is that the two guys don't look exactly the same. No two people are ever the same.
Even if they're both standard mooks with the same equipment and stats, one of them might be a 5'8", 175 lb human, while the other is a 5'10", 200 lb human. One of them might have longer arms or a bigger gut than the other. The one being studied might carry his shield slightly higher or lower than the other, or turn slightly when thrusting with his sword. The lore warden taking a moment to study one of them will notice the specific quirks of the individual being studied and get a bonus in exploiting those quirks to attack that specific individual.
