Pearl of Power Pricing Question

Rules Questions

A standard first level PoP allows the re-memorization of any first level spell for a cost of 1000gp. What price would you put on a limited PoP that only allowed the recall of spells from a particular school? Or of a single spell only? And would you maintain the same discount, if any, for higher level PoP's with the same limitation?

Generally, restricting it should allow no more then a 30% discount. Such a custom item is going to naturally be for a spell you would tend to use all the time, or all day.

Actually, you should price it as a 1/day use spell trigger item...because that's all it is. It just has the downside of needing a caster instead of having the power in the item, and the upside of using a caster's higher level.

And make sure you compare it to other items of similar level.

If a player is crafting an item I don't discount it for carve outs at all because generally players craft items for a specific purpose. The 'carve out' doesn't actually cost them anything. With the pearl of power in particular I would charge them full price for crafting.

If you are the GM and are adding one to a treasure pile or for sale in a shop I would probably offer to buy/ sell it at 30% below market. Maybe more or less depending on how much I wanted it in my players hands.

Liberty's Edge

I give discounts for this sort of thing (similar to the 30% mark) because inevitably the player finds themselves in a situation where it would've been nice to not have that restriction.
