Synthesis question

Rules Questions

Hey I was thinking of starting a summoner synthesis but my friends were telling me a whole bunch of stuff that just seems lame. So i am wondering what are the ins/outs of the class? like

casting spells if your edilon is a serpant?

enlarge person?

whos stats you use?

and

if you are targeted by a mental spell how it would effect you?

also would it be a good idea to use it kinda, but not exactly, like a construct armor?( the constructs that act like you armor when you are in them.)

If you don't have arms/hands, you can't cast spells.

I forget if you can be targeted by Enlarge Person, since you count both as a Humanoid and an Outsider while fused with your Eidolon.

You use the Eidolon's physical stats (Str, Dex, Con) and your own mental stats (Int, Wis, Cha).

I think mental spells affect you normally, but don't quote me on that.

It's effectively a magical armor that is a living being. Think of it like the Guyver or maybe (even though it's cliche) a Kamen Rider or Power Ranger.

kk. so you can't cast spells if your edilon doesn't have hands. even if you have them inside of it?

other then that thx!

Yep. Despite the fact you can reach into your backpack, get a scroll out and use it, you can't cast a spell with Somatic components.

Is there a spot where this is specifically mentioned?

I'm thinking of the text for Merge Forms, the regular summoner's ability at level 16.

Merge Forms wrote:
The summoner can cast spells while inside the eidolon by taking control of the eidolon for the duration of the casting. Any material components used for these spells are taken from the summoner's gear, even though they are otherwise inaccessible. The summoner can direct all of the eidolon's actions while merged, can perceive through its senses, and can speak through its voice.

I would have just assumed that your own verbal/somatic requirements are modified based on what is feasibly possible for you to do. (i.e. A serpentine eidolon could still make somatic gestures, as long as it isn't tied up or otherwise restricted.)

EDIT: But like I said, perhaps I missed someplace where arms or what have you are called out as required.

While fused with his eidolon, the synthesist uses the eidolon’s Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution, but retains his own Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma. The synthesist gains the eidolon’s hit points as temporary hit points. When these hit points reach 0, the eidolon is killed and sent back to its home plane. The synthesist uses the eidolon’s base attack bonus, and gains the eidolon’s armor and natural armor bonuses and modifiers to ability scores. The synthesist also gains access to the eidolon’s special abilities and the eidolon’s evolutions. The synthesist is still limited to the eidolon’s maximum number of natural attacks. The eidolon has no skills or feats of its own. The eidolon must be at least the same size as the synthesist. The eidolon must have limbs for the synthesist to cast spells with somatic components. The eidolon’s temporary hit points can be restored with the rejuvenate eidolon spell.

Emphasis mine. I'm also pretty sure you can't cast spells with your feet.

Check out the Ultimate Magic section of the Help/FAQ (top right on this site) - there's a load of Synthesist clarification stuff in there these days.

Welp, that sure looks like it'll do the trick. My bad.

Edit: Not sure why I didn't think to check the actual synthesist archetype.
