Playtesting Runelord Sorshen

Since it seems okay by James, I decided to post a speculative stat-up of Sorshen on Google Docs. (Posting it here would be a pain to format and leave me unable to make changes.)

This is in no way official, simply a best guess and likely subject to change. I look forward to your feedback. :)

This is cool... I'm sure the handmaiden devils are happy to be summoned by a chaotic being but that's their problem isn't it.

Ooo, a comment! :)

I picked handmaiden devils because I wanted a monster that fit the role of "seductive guardian" (Pathfinder #1, p.77), plenty could be seductive or a guardian but I needed one that could be both.

Also, Pathfinder doesn't have Blood War politics, and Pathfinder #12 (p.37) shows that Sorshen did have a belier devil working for her.

I am aware that Golarion doesn't have Blood War politics. All the same, I don't think devils really care for Chaotic foes or allies whatever the case may be.

That being said. I don't actually think it's a big deal as Sorshen is all that is Enchantress and thus can get away with stuff like this.

And Shhh! I'm playing in that adventure path. :)

Also you didn't select Archmage Arcana for her. I totally understand why though.

Fixed that, she's supposed to have arcane surge. I wouldn't have her use it more than once a round, twice if she uses amazing initiative.

I love that variant staff of the magi. =D

Thanks. :) Page 77 of Pathfinder #1 says she "carried a slim, lewdly-shaped staff made entirely of mithral." I combined it with her guisarme as a compromise between her weapon's depiction in the artwork and James Jacobs' dislike of double weapons (he thinks they're impractical even for a fantasy setting, and blames Darth Maul in the Phantom Menace trailers).

My goal was to make Sorshen's staff of the magi useful without having it be overpowering, as well as having the powers be thematic with lust-based outsiders (succubus and pairaka in particular). I also notice that I forgot to take it into account in the TACTICS section, but I can fix that since it's on Google Docs.

You did very well in my opinion. It looks like I did a lot of the same stuff and I may have to steal the things I like for your build that were different for my own, in the nicest imitation is the sincerest form of flattery kind of way. :) I did not use the mythic rules though, mine just uses the simple beyond 20th level from the core rulebook since it has worked well for me in the past as long as you don't go to far above 20.

Here is my first draft of sorts still needs a good bit of tweaking

Oh and I have to thank you for reminding me of google docs it is great for this.

Likewise, mainly with the guardians. Mithral golems were actually my first choice but they still weren't quite right. Mainly, I was too lazy to modify the mithral golem stats, but I also didn't want to bump up the CR. However, given certain modifications in a reprint I think that modified mithral shield golems wouldn't be unwarranted. Add an old red dragon and you cleanly bump up the CR to 25.

I made a point of only using spells from the Core for Sorshen's loadout, since James said the point of runelords was to show off what could be done without expansion pack spells and such. However, I had to break this rule for the items in order to get her stats to match her CR but I again had precedent on my side so that wasn't much of a problem.

I did not know James said that, I will have to adjust accordingly later when I have some time to look through them.

Cool build ... well played.

But where do the "alchemical stat bonuses come from?! And how do you figure +449 hp with a 26 Constitution?!!

Derron. She has alchemical comes from a unique vampiric process in which she gets the stat benefits of vampire but isn't. It's described in the lower part of the stat block. In addition she uses Charisma to determine hit points, not Constitution.

Gotcha ... I understand the math now. However, her CR is too low in my humble opinion. The various abilities and stat buffs in her "immortality" block are on par with 3rd edition "Chosen" templates (especially Chosen of Mystra). Said templates boosted CR by 4. She seems to be more in line with CR 27-29 ... 20 levels + 3 mythic tiers + at least 4 from the powerful templates. Getting to use CHA instead of CON for HP is a massive deal for her ...

I used the Monster Statistics by CR (Bestiary 2, p.293; Bestiary 3, p.291, Book of the Damned 2, p.37) as a guideline for her hp, AC, saves, etc. I also used Karzoug (Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition, p.363-365) as a comparison to make sure Sorshen has ability scores and gear worth of her ranking among runelords (she's 2nd-most powerful, Karzoug's 4th).

Of course, the best way to see if her CR's too low is to crash-test PCs against her. ;)
