High AC Monk? How?

Advice

How would you build a high AC Monk?

Thanks in advance! :)

Amulet of Natural Armor
Ring of Protection
Bracers of Armor
Belt of Incredible Dexterity
Headband of Inspired Wisdom

Scarab Sages

Never forget the ioun stone.

Crane Style -> Crane Wing -> Crane Ripost

Dodge -> Mobility

If you use the MoMs archetype, combine Crane Style with Panther Style and Snapping Turtle style.

Liberty's Edge

Wisdom and Dex :)

The key to Monk dex is remembering what you get as a baseline stacks with everything. So where mage armor is useless to most non-caster classes, it's great for a monk.

I would also create a Dexterity based Monk with Dexterity and Wisdom being your two highest ability scores. Invest in Weapon Finesse, Dodge and the Crane Style feat tree with supplemental feats such as Agile Manuevers. You can invest in the Agile weapon property for damage. You can fight defensively and utilize potions and elixirs to increase your AC and/or reduce the chance to hit you.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

A monk in one of my campaigns is a trip build (flowing monk?) and gets an additional dodge bonus to his AC equal to the number of opponents adjacent to him, who are almost always all on their backs. His AC is quite impressive.

Thank you so much for the quick answers. I'm still choosing among all the given options. ;)

Don't underestimate Snake Style as an option too.

You can use your Sense Motive as your AC and smack people that miss.

My level 4 Monk has 21 Sense Motive. Thinking of changing his name from Sun Xiao to Mien Chang Hama.

Has 17 AC normally, but it's a great backup plan, and it works on ranged attacks too, though Crane Wing all the way for melee attacks.

That's a good one. Maybe with an item to raise the skill? That would be sweet! :D

2500 gold Third Eye Expose raises Sense Motive by 5. It's a 3.5 item though.

Don't forget the Qinggong monk's ability to cast Barkskin using ki points. That's way cheaper than an equivalent Amulet of Natural Armor.

Thanks for the help.

Actually is a NPC build. I'm trying to make a Four Winds monk but i want something totally legal and using the Core, APG, UC e UM.

I intend to post the build so you guys could make suggestions (i'm really hoping that no PC of mine is reading any of this).

A small size also helps AC (plus makes them better at hiding). One of my favorite characters was a kobold monk that was nearly impossible to hit and really hard to notice when sneaking around (though the heavy focus on Dex meant his punches and slaps were more of a minor annoyance than legitimate threat heh).

Scarab Sages

You could take 1 level of Empyreal (WIS-based) sorcerer. That would give you access to the Shield and Mage Armor spells.

Shadow Lodge

Or just carry a wand(s) and if need be a trait that give you UMD.

Just a quick point but remember that the WIS bonus to AC applies to flat footed AC which makes it more valuable (to AC) than DEX.

That and :

Wand of Mage Armor before entering the dungeon.

Wand of Shield before entering the room full of hostiles.

Wand of Protection against xxx at beginning of combat
