Half Elf that becomes a Lich

Rules Questions

Let's assume that you have a somewhat cowardly Half elven Mystic Theurge. He often uses the personal spell "Paragon Surge" from Advance Races Guide which requires the target to be a half elf.

Now to extend his life he chooses to become a lich.

Does this cause him to loose the ability to cast "paragon Surge"?

I am leaning toward yes by RAW.

He's still a half-elf. He's just acquired a template that's all.

Although types like that tend to go off the rails once they realize that they can't enjoy their favorite coffee any more.

Type: The creature's type changes to undead. Do not recalculate BAB, saves, or skill ranks.

per above from SRD, type changes, but not subtype. Your half-elf would be

Medium Undead (half-elf)

Actually that's the real reason most liches have Magic Jar. No need to put up with missing the good things in life :)

Actually, I think his type becomes Undead (human, elf).

Yes. There's no such thing as the half-elf subtype. Half-Elf, the race, possesses two subtypes; human and elf.
