One of my players is arguing that negative energy affinity will protect you from enervation because it says the ray is negative energy. In my understanding, negative energy affinity is just a damage type that determines what heals and harms a creature. Otherwise, why would dhampir have a separate ability for level drain? Am I correct in this?

It does what it says on the tin. Dhampir are still alive, negative energy affinity doesn't mention that it protects against emergy drain, so I would say your player is wrong.

Afaik negative levels are always caused by negative energy, so the Dhampir wouldn't need a specific resistance to level loss if their affinity already covered it.

Exactly, that was my thinking precisely. Thank you.
