Doubt: Spirited charge

Rules Questions

A player who use to be a powerplayer has built a paladin who rides a horse and purports to deal with a critical in spirited charge 684 damage (he is half-dragon level 15). Whether this is true or not the talent spirited charge is unclear. What damage I have to double (or triple in the case of a lance)? Everything (ie enhancement bonus, Power Attack, strength, smite devil, specialized weapon, etc ...) or just some of this things?

PS I apologize for my English is probably wrong

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

You only double/triple the same damage you'd double/triple on a crit.

And what damage I double/triple on a crit?

Yes, you triple or (with lance crit) quintuple all of those. Only "extra dice", such as sneak attack and energy weapon damage isn't multiplied. In this, the wording of such rules fails to some degree. It is plain from examples given, but "extra dice" isn't as clear as it could be.

This damage claim does not surprise me as, back in D&D 3.5, one of my players had an epic Paladin. This character had the Great Smite feat x2, which means he had triple smite damage. Now Paladin's have double smite built in vs. some targets. Anyway, using a lawful, holy +5 sword, charging, smiting, sacrifice (which gave a few dice extra damage), bless weapon (which auto-confirmed crits vs evil)...he attacked my uber, hit die engorged BBEG super Balor....and did 648 damage...

Sovereign Court RPG Superstar 2011 Top 32

Let's try an example. Let's say we have a lv15 paladin with a 30 strength (half-dragon, as you said) and a 34 charisma. Those ability scores are quite high but it's a powerful race. We'll give our paladin a +4 holy lance. On a Spirited Charge crit we get x5 damage (x3 from lance with feat, x3 from crit stacks to x5).

Our base damage is 1d8+15 (strength, used 2H)+4 (enhancement)+15 (smite)+12 (power attack) +2d6 (holy)for a total of:
1d8+2d6+46. The crit damage multiplies everything except the extra dice, so 5d8+2d6+230, which is a max of 282 and an average of ~260. This is big damage but pretty far short of 600. We could squeeze a little bit more (+75) by having it be a first hit smiting an undead or something like that. Are you sure your player isn't multiplying the two x3s together to get x9? That mistake would pretty easily get us up to the 600 range.

Radiant Charge + Litany of Righteousness

I saw an item (don't recall where or what) that increases you paladin level by 4 for smite considerations. That would add another 4 x 2 (first hit) x 5 (critical) = 40.
