Dismissing Spells

Rules Questions

Do you need line of effect to dismiss a spell?

Dismissible:
If the duration line ends with “(D),” you can dismiss the spell at will. You must be within range of the spell's effect and must speak words of dismissal, which are usually a modified form of the spell's verbal component. If the spell has no verbal component, you can dismiss the effect with a gesture. Dismissing a spell is a standard action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity.

A spell that depends on concentration is dismissible by its very nature, and dismissing it does not take an action, since all you have to do to end the spell is to stop concentrating on your turn.

That would be a grey area, but I would say in general that you would. But it would be an off-the-cuff answer.

I would also tie it to directing/redirecting a spell as it seems related.

Thus it seems reasonable to require line of effect to dismiss a spell in general.

Interestingly, I would say no, since the rules only require that you be in range. This allows (say) a Black Tentacles spell to be dismissed while the caster is behind a Wall of Force, which has significant tactical implications.

Having said that, I do agree with James that it is something of a grey area, and the GM's word is final.

If you cast Dismissal on someone who is not native to the dreamlands but is there via Dream or a ritual will it force them awake?
