Mythic Monsters

Product Discussion

Ok, so we know mythic rules are coming, and we know there will be rules for making "mundane" monsters mythic. But we also know there will be brand new pure mythic monsters in the book. So the question is, what old you like to see?

Note: I'm assuming that demon lords and arch devils will be in there or statted up eventually, so I'm not counting/listing them.

With that said:

-vampire lords/masters
-mythic nightshades
-3.0 abominations (I don't know if Paizo can use these)
-mythic linnorms
-a granfaloon/legion type monster from Symphony of the Night (amazing creature)

As a side note, I hope there are plenty of GM options for modifying/mythic-izing monsters in the book!

What are your wanted mythic beasties?

my first thought was vampire lords/ masters would Not be needed. The existing template basically allows for this already. Given vampires have class levels giving them Mythic tiers Would be enough.
Even a i turn into a giant bat monster can be handled by the current rules. ( cr +1 uses beast shape 2 or 3 maybe?) Vampires currently do almost everything they are supposed to.

However mythic vampires could make mythic spawn And i think rules for that would be useful.

Really what i hope the mythic monster rules might do ( and the minotaur example seems to support this) is allow some of the classic monsters from myths that had the touch of divinity to play their roles better.

So, chimera, hydra, medusa etc.

Maybe mythic vampires sparkle?

In all seriousness, I like this idea

Makes it a difference between fighting a hydra and The Hydra. Not to be confused with fighting HYDRA.

A pox on you!

A mythic vampire might be immune to death by sunlight or it might be able to withstand it for a considerable amount of time.

Paizo can indeed use abominations - the monsters from the Epic Level Handbook are open source, and Paizo has already converted the mu spore (of all things) in Bestiary 2 or 3. My problem with abominations is that they throw the outer planes hierarchies into chaos. For instance, the infernal was greater than all but the strongest Demon Lords/Archdevils. I know that's kind of the point of course, but I didn't like it myself. To me the Demon Lords, Archdevils, Four Horsemen et al are the top of the evil food pyramid.

I have to admit though, I really dug the dream larva...

Some mythic CR 20+ monsters I'd like to see:

-Oliphaunt of Jandelay
-Elder serpents - they are hinted at in the Serpent's Crown AP and said to be infused with Ydersius' power, which would sort of make them abominations. Or maybe they're just half-fiend serpentfolk...
-Kaiju that are distinct from the kaiju-ish Spawn of Rovagug.
-Truly legendary sea monsters on par with the Leviathan or World Serpent.
-I'm a sucker for Lovecraft, so Elder Gods and Great Old Ones. Also the very Lovecraftian havero from A History of Ashes.

The more I think about it though, the more it occurs to me that a lot of Paizo's monsters are what I would have previously defined as mythic. The jabberwocky, hekatonkheires, titan, behemoth, balor - these are as mythic as you can get in my mind. What's more mythic than a great wyrm red dragon? I would almost prefer to see every mythic creature be unique, either because it's a one-of-a-kind (like the Oliphaunt of Jandelay), or because it's a templated non-mythic creature. Just a thought.

My second sentence was in reference to the quote below it, not my dumb joke. Everybody knows that real vampires do not sparkle.

granfaloon/legion type monster

There is already the Warsworn in one Adventure Path that is 100% like this.

I'm definitely hoping for a Nine-Tailed Fox Kaiju. Yes, I've been reading too much naruto.

Another thing that might be interesting is stats for 'fully powered' eidolons in their 'true forms' when they aren't summoned.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Vampire Lords should gain abilities that get better the older he gets and apply across an ever-widening area.

  • Gain ability to use Mass Suggestion on townsfolk across an entire village or country
  • Control plants, animals within his domain
  • Gain awareness across entire domain
  • Gain his shadow back as a shadow demon companion
  • Able to walk in sunlight, albeit many vampire powers only operate in darkness
  • Able to assume the form of a swarm of bats or rats
  • Convert animals/plants/people in his domain to vampires at will
  • Sicken mortals that come near him
  • Ability to make holy symbols in his presence burst into flames
  • See in and create magical darkness

So you see, there a lot of things missing from vampire lore that would fit as abilities granted to the few ancient vampires that rise above the rest.

Yup. Exactly. Lots of potential there.

@ Sincubus: whaaaaaat! Oh my.

I also wouldn't mind seeing the Leshay maybe as some super fey, and the Gloom from ELH.

The description of the hekatonkheires mentions some of their humber that are even more powerfull, and of course no matter how powerfull you are there should be something you are afraid of. There might be a very good reason why several gods united to bind - not kill - a certain god.

Silver Crusade

I have been watching a lot of fan made videos about WoW raids - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWKoRKR8ofY this one is a good example - so, how about using the mystic rules to emulate the feeling of a raid?

Enemies so powerfull that it takes a team to have even a slight chance to bring them down, could be fun.

I know there will be a way to make mythic versions of current monsters, as we saw with the humble minotaur. A mythic hekatonkheires would definitely be a world-ending threat. I also know that, as with that minotaur, "mythic" is not the same as "really high challenge rating." I guess I'm just not sure what kind of species should be entirely mythic, as opposed to just being a super version of a normal monster. Does that make sense? Meh, whatever. I'm sure Paizo will do a bang up job.

As for Granfaloon, there's actually a beasty from the Tome of Horrors called the corpse orgy that is essentially an evil and sentient bunch of corpses stuck together. One even shows up in a very Castlevania-ish haunted castle from an early Adventure Path.

Mythic creatures should have more going on than merely uber-combat abilities.

For example, back in the day, there was a great article on mooncalves that added "omen" feats. The feats weren't crazy powerful, or anything, but had large-area negative effects like "all magical curing does 1 less hp".

Also, the Elder Evils books had some great material as well, having to do with omens of doom.

As for specific creatures? I'm a huge fan of the gibbering orb, personally, and the epic pseudonatural template :)
