Ninja: Combat Trick & Ninja: Rogue Talent

Rules Questions

Grand Lodge

Here's what is in question. Is it possible for a Ninja to take Combat Trick to gain a Combat Feat and then use Rogue Talent to gain another Feat.

The part that is in question is not if the Ninja could take Combat Trick twice but is if the Ninja is level 10 does it gain access to the advanced talents and as such the Rogue Talent: Feat from the Advanced Talent Listing.

The core rulebook stipulates that at 10th level or above any of the advanced talents can be taken instead of a rogue talent, does this bleed through to a Ninja using Ninja Trick: Rogue Talent to gain access tot he Rogue list.

This gives access to any feat not just a combat feat as Combat Trick does.

Quote:
Rogue Talent: The ninja can select a rogue talent in place of a ninja trick. The ninja cannot select a rogue talent that has the same name as a ninja trick. The ninja can select this talent multiple times.

No, you can't.

Grand Lodge

I know that bit Blue Star.

It's not the same name it's a completely different name and under the Rogue Talent, Advanced Talents section it notes the Advanced Rogue Talent: Feat.

Rogue Talent: The ninja can select a rogue talent in place
of a ninja trick. The ninja cannot select a rogue talent that
has the same name as a ninja trick. The ninja can select
this talent multiple times.

Rogue Talents: As a rogue gains experience, she learns
a number of talents that aid her and confound her foes.
Starting at 2nd level, a rogue gains one rogue talent. She
gains an additional rogue talent for every 2 levels of rogue
attained after 2nd level. A rogue cannot select an individual
talent more than once.

Combat Trick: A rogue that selects this talent gains a bonus combat feat (see Chapter 5).

- Note this is a Normal Rogue Talent

Advanced Talents: At 10th level, and every two levels thereafter, a rogue can choose one of the following advanced talents in place of a rogue talent.

Feat: A rogue may gain any feat that she qualifies for in place of a rogue talent.

- Note this is an Advanced Talent

They have completely different names and are both available to be taken by a level 10 rogue.

Once again I just want to make it clear for those of you who may just read the topic and reply instantly. I am NOT! trying to take Ninja Trick: Combat Trick & Rogue Talent: Combat Trick.

I am questioning taking Ninja Trick: Combat Trick & Ninja Trick: Rogue Talent - Feat.

Grand Lodge

hahahaha derp put it up to lack of sleep hadn't even realized that ninja tricks have their own advance section where feat is aswell XP DERP!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

A Ninja cannot use Rogue Talent to get Combat Trick twice. A Rogue *can* use Ninja Trick to get Combat Trick twice, due to using different wording.

Similarly, a Ninja can get Advanced Rogue Talents, but a Rogue cannot get Advanced Ninja Tricks.

The whole thing is stupid. Both should be able to get advanced tricks/talents and both should be able to grab combat trick twice, IMO. If the tricks (they are!) and talents (they're not!) are any good, the rogue or ninja won't be looking to spend them all on bonus feats anyway.

Ok. Can you clarify what you're asking because the thread name is confusing.

Are you asking if a Ninja can select the advanced Rogue talent "Feat"?

I'm not clear how "combat trick" plays into it.

He was asking if he can take Combat Trick and then the Rogue Talent trick and pick "Feat".

That doens't work btw, since you can't pick Advanced Rogue Talents with Rogue Talent Trick. You could with the Advanced Rogue Talent trick though, except that Feat is a advanced ninja trick already. So you can't after all.

Also you can take avanced talent only once, unlike the base version. So make your choice there count.

Sczarni

That's what I thought he was asking - and you're right for the reasons you listed. But just so the OP is clear, there is nothing stopping him from taking Combat Trick (Trick) to gain a feat, and then taking Feat (Master Trick) to also gain a feat.

They're called the exact same thing.

Krodjin is correct, a ninja can take additional feats through Advanced Talents Master Trick.

Honestly, I don't see any reason to keep the two separate at all. I just give the Rogue all of the Ninja's toys (except Ki Pool) and allow them to take Rogue Talents and Ninja Tricks interchangeably.

Of course, I also add most of the Assassin and Shadowdancer class abilities to that list. *shrug*

Like I've tried to make apparent twice.

I was never asking if a Ninja could take the following:

2nd Level Ninja
Ninja Trick used to gain Combat Trick.
4th Level Ninja
Ninja Trick used to gain Rogue Talent then used to gain Combat Trick.

This is NOT the question at any stage.

The question has always been can a Ninja take the following:

2nd Level Ninja
Ninja Trick used to gain Combat Trick
10th Level Ninja
Master Ticks used to gain Advanced Rogue Talent then used to gain Feat.

Note that I said at 10th level when Ninja's gain access to the Advanced Rogue Talents as well. Admittedly in the second post I unintentionally omitted the "Advanced" part.

Why not this:

2nd Level Ninja
Ninja Trick used to gain Combat Trick
10th Level Ninja
Master Tricks used to gain Feat.

No need for any complicated ninja trick to rogue talent conversion business.

As has been stated before, a Ninja can't use Rogue Talent or Advanced Rogue Talent to pick up a rogue talent with the same name as a Ninja Trick.

There is a Ninja Trick called "Feat" already, which does the same as the Rogue Talent.

So to answer your question: No, you can't do that, but you can take the Ninja version of "Feat" as well as the ninja version of "Combat Trick".
