Playing Summoners

Advice

So I like eidolons, I like synthesists. Normally i'm not keen on regular summoners. I mean I like them as characters, just not necessarily play characters.

I had an idea for a summoner character character. My question is how to play them without the eidolon eclipsing them as the MVP?

Is this a literal question on how not to have the Synthesist appear over top of you? Or a question on how to be the star of the show not your Eidelon?

Either way you can't. Its like asking to make a Wizard that outshines his magic. Any ideas I can think of to make you the star strongly soften your ability to contribute to the party.

Make the eidolon small and turn it into an advance scout with all defensive/stealth/movement based evolutions and not be a combat monster. Then. Unless the concept for the summoner was to be a small sneaky scout, that should handle things nicely.

It's a matter of how to make it so the summoner is more than just a cheerleader, Micky Goldmill, or a polyp on the eidolon's rump.

One thought that occurs to me is to be a party buffer and a self buffer melee combatant.

I prefer the Master Summoner archtype, I like the aspect of summoning creatures more than my eidolon...but thats me

We had a summoner whose Eidolon was used as a Rogue substitute - Small, with many instances of the Skilled evolution. Very useful out of combat, but won't steal anyone's spotlight in battle - when fighting it pretty much just used Aid Another.

Eidolons are infinitely flexible.

If you're worried about your eidolon out-doing you in combat make your eidolon good at something else.

Knowledge Monkey
Rogue-esque skill Monkey
Utility caster

Eidolons excel at being combat brutes but there's nothing forcing them into that role.

Check out my alias, Darius.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

the thing about Summoner is your pet is your strongest asset and with the Synthesist Archetype you the summoner gets all of its power and become a true monstrosity. Example given below of how great you can be with the Eidolon out and technically your not being out shined by it because you are it.

Race: Half Elf
Class: Summoner (Synthesist Archetype)
Stats: Str = 10
Dex = 10
Con = 17 with racial modifier
Int = 13
Wis = 14
Cha = 14
when leveling add 3 to con and 2 to cha
take the Half Elf Favored Class Option for Summoner
Eidolon's base form Aquatic
Powers obtained via Eidolon = -Fast Healing x4
-Natural Armor x5
-Limbs x3
-Claws x3
-All 5 immunities
Feats = -Extra Evolution x5
-Toughness
-Dodge
-Combat Expertise
-Combat Reflexes
-Resilient Eidolon

this build with no items magical or other wise gives the following statistics at lv 20 when infused with your Eidolon:

Heath = 320 with out Eidolon and 485 when fused with it
Immunity to all damage excluding force, physical, positive and negative
Fast Healing 4
7 attacks a round at full bab each (15)
AC = 51 with out Combat Expertise and 56 with Combat Expertise
Self Healing via Class spell list

@ psion-psycho: Yeah synthesists I really like. It's the regular summoner that requires special thinking.

Also, how did you get that high a hit point total?

Lantern Lodge

Concerning he HitPoints it is easy. High con + toughness and when fused with your Eidolon its hit points become temp hit points for you.

Personaly I view the summoner as a weak class unless going the wrought I just suggested. The thing is what a summoner does is either be a cheerleader as u stated early to its Eidolon or become the Eidolon. Then again you can always downgrade or not even use it in combat and stick with the summon monster aspect of the class but in doing so its like fighting with an arm tied behind your back.

Its like playing a melee wizard. Its doable but u have to jump through hoops of fire to do so and even then you will not be as powerful as the other wizard. Some things sadly just cant be done about it but if you do find a way please do tell because I would be greatly interested.

Also concerning the Health factor that is if you rolled max or the gm foolishly allowed you to have max hit points. Personal a good method I have come across and all y friends now do it in there games to keep health under control is have the 1st lv be max health and every level after that up to 10th level the hit die are averaged. So if you have a d10 hit die and say a con of 20 then at 1st level you would have 15hp and then next level it would be the average of the hit die + con being 5.5 + 5 added to your total. This helps keep the parties health on a decent average for encounters after all its a dam shame when the fighter or barbarian's health is on par or lower than the wizard lol.
