So, after being scolded for again for using my roommate's laptop, now that I actually have some cash about to come in, I figure it is time to get one of my own. But laptops are so 2008. What I want is a tablet.
So there are two major competitor, the Kindle Fire and the iPad(n). (What is it? iPad4 right now?) I've been looking up all the technical specs online, but honestly, I'm not as technologically literate as I lead my parents to believe when I hooked up their wireless router. Frankly, I don't know the difference between a XTCDKFJ3093583 video processor and a SGKGSJSI309358 video processor. Is it better if they have more letters?
Anyway, I was hoping maybe some tech savvy person here might be able to explain it in layman's terms.
And just to relate this back to gaming, I do have several of the Paizo PDFs on my dusty old PC and would like to be able to transfer them to the tablet for use at our games. Also, I was wondering if anybody here has compared and knows which app store offers more of interest to role-players? (Since my understanding is you'll either be limited to the Apple store or the Amazon store.)

Neither, Nexus 7 by Google. I have one for reading my paizo pdf's and to use iCrit and iFumble, and I highly recommend it.
It has a great processor, and the 16 gb drive is enough to hold all my paizo pdf's. Plus its android!
But the price is the part I like the best, half the price of the iPad, and a little more then the Fire

I don't have any experience with any tablets other than iPads. From what I can tell, the iPad is a great swiss-army knife. It can do everything pretty good. If you want something just for ebooks or mp3s etc, there might be better options.
If you're looking for a laptop replacement, I highly recommend the iPad. I bought the iPad (1) when it came out. I bought the iPad 2 when it came out. I didn't buy the iPad 3 when it came out.
Personally if I was buying an iPad now, I'd go for the 2 because it should be significantly cheaper. But the 3 is better in almost every way (it's a little heavier than the 2).

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict very few people are going to sing the praises of the kindle fire.
I have an iPad, I like it. I wouldn't even consider buying a laptop ever again unless it was for an occupation, and then if they don't want to spring for it, it probably isn't worth it.
Instead start comparing some of the google based tablets to the iPad. As more makers of tablets hit the market, more high quality devices are showing up, I don't any though, so I can only comment on the iPad.
The touch screen is great, it's really responsive and probably only takes 20-30 minutes to adjust to. It's mostly idiot proof, but you can make it do whatever you need with some effort. I steer away from apple interfacing software for my PC though, except to make a backup.
One name I've heard that has some pretty good hardware is Asus, I would check them out for some reviews. I've pretty much only heard good things. Find one, put it in your hands and see how it feels to use it. That's really the most important thing about a tablet, do you like using it and is it comfortable for you. Everything else is gravy.
Posting this, sitting in my backyard, taking a break between movies on my tablet. Seriously one of my favorite activities period now. Sitting outside at night and watching a movie.

My wife has a Kindle Fire. She likes it well enough. Great as an e-reader, playing games, and doing some basic interwebz stuff. The price isn't too bad either, and if you are signed in to Amazon Prime it opens up a bunch of stuff as I understand it.
That being said, if you're looking for a laptop replacement type then you're better off taking some of the above advice and lookin into either an iPad or one of those other tablets.
