Playing an Alchemist for the first time and the nature of Extracts is raising all sorts of questions. Chief among them, can an alchemist use metamagic feats with extracts? It seems to be a no-brainer but the way the feats are written would seem to say no.
On a tangent, if an Alchemist can't use MM feats then what are some good feats for an alchemist TO take?

I don't believe they can take metamagic feats. Extracts use a lot of spell-like mechanics, but they're not spells.
The best feat for an alchemist is Extra Discovery. For quite a long time, really. There are a lot of very powerful discoveries, and you can take Extra Discovery every feat slot after 2nd level.
What kind of alchemist are you making? Buff and melee? Take fighter-type feats. Skill monkey? Can go pretty much anywhere with your feats. Crowd control with bombs? Improved Initative and Extra Discovery to get more bomb stuff you can do to fit the situation. Damage with bombs? Extra Bombs, Ricochet Splash Weapon, work on ranged weapon feats.
I've just started a crowd-control naturalist alchemist, no archetypes. I took Point Blank Shot and Precise Shot at 1st because I'm going to be using bombs. Infusion will be my first discovery so I can help the group out with extracts. I'll take Improved Initiative pretty soon, likely at 3rd, so that I can get crowd control effects going before enemies move into melee. After that it will mostly be Extra Discovery so I can get all the strange bomb effects as fast as possible - Tanglefoot Bomb, Stink Bomb, Acid Bomb, etc.
They can't take metamagic feats :-( They do have a number of discoveries that mimic mm feats though.
