Zhyen familiar

Rules Questions

Grand Lodge

Under the description of the Zhyen, it mentions that it can serve as a familiar. It also mentions in the description Daivrat class, that you can gain a Zhyen, with the Improved Familiar feat.

So, I ask, how?

What is the minimum caster level?

What is the required alignment?

I would say 5th and Neutral. But I cant find the info anywhere.

The Daivrat Prc can get one at level 6.

Grand Lodge

True, but I see no reason why another familiar granting class should not have access to it.

I have a friend who will be playing a Suli Tattooed Sorcerer with the Marid bloodline, and is interested in a Zhyen familiar.

It is well suited for this PC's flavor.

Dark Archive

I would think any class with the Familiar feature and Improved Familiar could take it.

The Daivrat Prc can just get one at 6th level.

Grand Lodge

I know about the Daivrat.
It's the details of getting it via Improved Familiar feat that confounds me.

Silver Crusade

2 people marked this as FAQ candidate.

I've been questioned about this today. I used Herolab to generate my character, once I added improved familiar, Zhyen of all 4 flavours came up (this is at character generation) and I cannot find anything anywhere saying there is a level requirement beyond improved familiar. Can we have a ruling on the requirements for the familiar?

Thanks.

Flavor text that's why others can't have access to them. Daivrat have simply jumped through enough fluff hoops to earn the respect of Genies and learned how to befriend a Zhyen. It's a cool limited edition toy that adds incentive to take that PrC. Other classes haven't put in the mileage to get the ultra rare mega radically unique snowflake. Though you're free to change this during house games.

Actually, it's the fluff that allow others to take them. "they often serve as familiars to powerful mages, especially the genie-friends known as daivrat." Note it doesn't say 'exclusively used by Daivrat's' but 'especially by [them]'. Going by the fluff it seems that the entry is lacking the requirements for the Improved Familiar feat not that it can't be taken with it.
