So I am looking to introduce a minor villian in my homebrew campaign. Fury of Elderwood players please, this is a spoiler.
Now the party is travelling far from home into unfriendly lands, on a quest to retrieve an item. Another group went before them but never returned.
What happened is the first party was caught and gave up (most) of the info on why they were there. The guy that captured them ( a minor moble and his retainers) are scouring the area looking for the item, and leaving destruction in their wake. The party will come across the burned out villages and get the story about an evil knight and his men razing the country side.
Now I would like the party to encounter this guy once, then again at the end of the adventure. The inital encounter needs some event that ends the battle and parts both sides. Could be a fire in a village, a bridge breaking apart and both sides end up on opposite banks, ect... This will greatly thin out the villians forces and make for a better end game encounter.
The party is 3rd level, has a paladin, cleric, packlord druid, ranger, and a yet to be added fighter type.
The Villian is a 3/1 cavalier/aristocrat, has a retinue of a wizard, a ranger, and a cleric (all 3rd level), along with about a dozen or so soldiers (level 1 warriors, plus 2-3 leader types).
